Copa Libertadores wrap: Campos strikes fire Bolivar

26 April 2012 20:53

A pair of magical strikes from Jhasmani Campos has helped Bolivar upset Santos 2-1 in their Copa Libertadores clash on Wednesday.

Santos were once again defeated at altitude as a Campos goal and an own goal from his free kick guided Bolivar past the reigning champions in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie at the Estadio Hernando Siles.

Santos had already tasted defeat at the same ground in the group stage of this season's competition when they were beaten by The Strongest, and their last-16 tie with Bolivar could not have got off to a worse start.

Within two minutes the hosts went ahead as Campos' thunderous free kick hit the post but ricocheted off the back of Rafael and into the net.

Santos managed to pull level in the 34th minute with some help from their free-kick specialist.

Elano's effort from the dead ball was tipped onto the post by Marcos Arguello before Maranhao stormed in to slam the loose ball into the net.

Bolivar controlled possession throughout the second half as Santos' senior players began to struggle to compete at altitude and were finally rewarded after 75 minutes when Campos found the bottom corner with a sweetly struck free kick from 35 yards out.

Internacional and Fluminense played out a disappointing goalless draw in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores tie at the Beira-Rio in an ill-tempered affair.

Neither side could break through in a cagey opening period before hosts Internacional were awarded a penalty just before the hour mark.

Jesus Datolo stepped up to take it but failed to beat Diego Cavalieri, who made a fantastic save to keep the game level.

Fluminense's former Inter Milan player Rafael Sobis had his 20-yard effort held by Muriel and later on Thiago Neves saw his well-struck effort from range sail over the bar for the visitors.

Internacional's increased pressure paid off after when Damiao was brought down by Edinho in the area but the spot kick was wasted.

Former Manchester City striker Jo thought he had won it for the hosts in stoppage time after a lofted ball into the box fell to him but his attempt came back out off the post and was cleared.
