Ligue 1 preview: Nice looking for advantage in relegation battle

21 April 2012 05:28

Nice midfielder Anthony Mounier is shaping as his team's saviour as the southern French club try to avoid relegation from Ligue 1.

With six games left this season, Nice are currently 14th in Ligue 1, four spots away from the relegation zone.

That gap is only one point, however, meaning a win against last-placed Auxerre on Saturday will be crucial for Nice in their quest to play in France's top division next season.

There are seven clubs within two points of each other in the lower reaches of the Ligue 1 table, starting with 13th-placed Lorient and ending with second-bottom Ajaccio.

But Nice can get a jump on the lot of them by beating Auxerre, who are almost certain to be relegated.

All of Nice's relegation-threatened rivals play teams above them this weekend.

Mounier will be the key for Nice. The 24-year-old French midfielder is the team's top scorer this season with eight goals, including four since the beginning of February.

It is the former Lyon youth player's best ever tally of goals in a Ligue 1 season.

Nice have played 11 league games since February 4 and the south coast club have only lost three times.

Mounier also set up Franck Dja Djedje's equaliser against Nancy during his side's impressive run of form over the past couple of months.

Victory on Saturday could see Nice build a four-point gap to the relegation zone.

Of the clubs below Nice, Ajaccio host Nancy, Sochaux travel to play Paris Saint-Germain, Brest take on Rennes, Dijon face reigning champions Lille and Caen are up against St Etienne.

At the other end of the table, league leaders Montpellier can take a step closer to their first ever Ligue 1 title with victory against Valenciennes.

Despite losing 2-1 away to Lorient on Sunday, Montpellier still lead PSG by two points.

Rene Girard's team are the second-best defensive side in Ligue 1 this season and coming up against the third-worst attacking team should point to a home win for Montpellier and the crucial three points.

In other games this weekend, Evian host Toulouse and Marseille travel to Bordeaux.
