Bundesliga preview: Dortmund look to wrap up title race

21 April 2012 02:55

Borussia Dortmund can seal their second consecutive Bundesliga title when they host Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday.

Dortmund accounted for second-placed Bayern Munich and third-placed Schalke in their last two starts and can win the German top flight with three points against fourth-placed Moenchengladbach at home.

Juergen Klopp's team are eight points clear on top with three games remaining and could even be crowned German champions before kick-off should Bayern draw or lose to Werder Bremen earlier on Saturday.

With the focus largely on their Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid, Bayern are again expected to field a weakened Bundesliga side, having rested a number of key players in their scoreless draw at home to Mainz last week.

Bremen have won just two of their last 15 Bundesliga fixtures but remain in the hunt for European qualification next season, trailing sixth-placed Bayer Leverkusen by just three points.

Schalke are determined to hold on to third spot and a guaranteed Champions League group-stage berth with a win against Augsburg.

"We have to put all our strength and energy into achieving our objective," Schalke defender Christoph Metzelder told schalke04.com.

"It's very important that we hang on to our current position until the end of the campaign because that will allow the club to plan and we'll know we're in the Champions League next season."

Elsewhere, Stuttgart can move a step closer to European competition next season with a win against lowly Cologne.

Stuttgart are four points clear of Leverkusen and the bookmakers' favourites to account for Cologne, who have lost five of their last six league games and are four points adrift of Bundesliga safety.

Relegation-threatened Hertha Berlin and Kaiserslautern will face off in the German capital, with anything but a win for bottom-placed Kaiserslautern officially consigning them to the second division next season.

In other games, Mainz host Wolfsburg on Friday, while Hamburg travel to Nuremburg and Hoffenheim entertain Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

Hannover will take on Freiburg on Sunday.
