Pele celebrates Santos centenary

16 April 2012 17:59

Pele has predicted a bright future for his former club Santos at the Brazilian club's centenary dinner and says he wants to play a role.

At celebrations on Saturday to honour 100 years since Santos was founded, Pele paid tribute to the current team led by Brazil international Neymar.

Pele, who holds the record for the most games played for Santos (1106), also pledged to provide active support to the club.

"(The legacy) continues with the emergence of new generations," Pele said.

"However, like (Mario) Zagallo said, you'll have to put up with me for a long time."

The centenary celebrations involved 15,000 fans at the club's stadium.

Pele arrived in a helicopter carrying the Copa Libertadores trophy that Santos won last season.

The 71-year-old scored over 500 goals during his time with Santos and was keen to remember his former team-mates.

"I am very happy to reconnect with old friends today, but I am also sad because they are not all here," Pele said.

"I'm sure they are present at God's side during this beautiful occasion. I have always said that I did not do anything alone."
