Belgian First Division wrap: Westerlo near safety

13 April 2012 23:53

Westerlo stepped up their bid for survival in the Belgian First Division, defeating Sint-Truiden 4-0 in a relegation play-off on Friday.

A pair of goals to Ibrahima Sidibe and Reynaldo gave hosts Westerlo the emphatic win in front of their home fans at Het Kuipje.

Westerlo are now six points clear of Sint-Truiden in the relegation play-off group, with Sint-Truiden needing to win the remaining two matches between the sides in order to avoid dropping to the Second Division.

In Friday's other match, Cercle Brugge and Lierse played out a 0-0 draw in Europa League play-off Group A.

Visiting Lierse ended the match with 10 men at Jan Breydelstadion Stadium after Karim Saidi was shown a red card in the 82nd minute.

Cercle are two points clear of Lierse at the top of the standings, with Leuven and Mechelen, who meet on Saturday, rounding out the group in third and fourth respectively.

Top place secures a Europa League berth.
