Klopp delighted as title edges closer

12 April 2012 13:48

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp believes that his side were worthy of their 1-0 victory against Bayern Munich at Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday.

A late Robert Lewandowski goal was the difference between the two clubs and ensured that Dortmund have one hand on the Bundesliga trophy as they are now six points clear at the top of the table.

"The final period was incredible," Klopp told reporters after the game.

"Hats off to my team, who could have played much better.

"I think the victory was well deserved, I am very happy.

"We now have just three days to prepare ourselves for the next task - with our 'friends' in Gelsenkirchen (Schalke)."

Bayern will reflect on a poor individual display from Arjen Robben as one of the reasons why the title race took a potentially decisive turn in the wrong direction.

The Holland winger had the chance to cancel out Lewandowski's goal from the penalty spot with four minutes to go after being brought down by home goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller but his weak effort was easily saved.

He was then presented with an open goal at the death but shot over the bar.

"It is very disappointing," Robben said. "I don't know what I should say.

"I have scored 10 or 11 penalties in a row over the last three years and today's (Wednesday) was the first I have missed.

"For that to happen in such a moment is bitter - yes, it is embarrassing.

"Dortmund have taken a huge step and we can almost say that they are champions."

The win allowed Borussia Dortmund to become the first team to beat Bayern Munich in four consecutive Bundesliga games since Otto Rehhagel's Werder Bremen did so between 1991 and 1993.

After the match against Schalke, Dortmund will tackle Borussia Monchengladbach, Koln and Freiburg in their final Bundesliga fixtures.
