Bundesliga wrap: Gladbach rot continues

11 April 2012 02:07

Borussia Moenchengladbach's winless run in the Bundesliga continued on Tuesday, while Cologne suffered a 4-0 loss to Mainz.

Lucien Favre's fourth-placed Moenchengladbach side are without a win in their last four league outings after playing out a 2-2 draw against 10-man Werder Bremen.

Markus Rosenberg put Bremen ahead after 18 minutes, capitalising on a mistimed clearance from Brazilian defender Dante.

But the game turned just nine minutes later, with Bremen defender Sebastian Boenisch sent off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity when he fouled Patrick Herrmann.

Mike Hanke levelled with a neat finish just after half-time, before he completed his brace when he finished off a counter-attack to give his side the lead on 67 minutes.

Bremen snatched a brave point with a quarter of an hour to play when Brazilian Naldo headed in a set-piece, helping them into sixth.

Cologne remain in the relegation play-off spot after slumping to a 4-0 loss to Mainz, who struck three times in the opening 37 minutes.

A penalty from Eugen Polanski was followed by strikes from Mohamed Zidan, Nicolai Mueller and Adam Szalai as Mainz cruised to a comfortable win.

Germany and Cologne forward Lukas Podolski was reportedly struck in the eye by a coin, but played out the match despite the injury scare.

Hertha Berlin remain in the relegation zone after their 2-1 loss at home to Freiburg.

An own goal from Roman Hubnik gave the visitors the lead and Sebastian Freis doubled their advantage.

Hubnik pulled a goal back for the hosts, but they were unable to find an equaliser.

Stuttgart consolidated fifth spot with a 3-1 win at Augsburg, with Serdar Tasci, Martin Harnik and Vedad Ibisevic netting for the victors.
