Mazzarri rues missed penalty call

8 April 2012 09:27

Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri feels his side did enough to beat Lazio on Saturday and believes a missed penalty call turned the match.

Third-placed Lazio triumphed 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico to open up a six-point gap between the teams, but the former Sampdoria boss believes that the result was unfair.

"In my view the team played well," Mazzarri said. "We pegged Lazio back into their own half for the entire opening 45 minutes, but struggled to score.

"When it was 1-1 we were dominating, then there was a stonewall penalty for a challenge on (Goran) Pandev and that’s when the game changed.

"The incident is incredible, as Pandev was going straight to the goalkeeper and the defender paid no attention to the ball, just going straight for my player.

"After the break we ran out of steam a little bit and our marking was too lax on Stefano Mauri's goal."

The result gives Lazio a stranglehold on third place, and moves them three points clear of Udinese in fourth after they defeated Parma earlier in the day.
