Ligue 1 preview: PSG seek to arrest slide

5 April 2012 17:36

Paris Saint-Germain head into Sunday's clash with Marseille in desperate need of three points to maintain their title challenge.

The capital club slipped behind Ligue 1 leaders Montpellier on goal difference following last Saturday's 2-1 loss at Nancy and have played one more match than the leaders.

PSG coach Carlo Ancelotti once again insisted his side were on the end of poor luck but that will fall on the deaf ears of the club's rich investors if they fail to win against Marseille.

The Nancy loss came on the back of two-straight draws but Ancelotti's side can ill-afford further slip ups with only eight games to play.

Montpellier meet Sochaux this weekend, and will follow up by playing their game in hand, against Marseille, on Wednesday.

The leaders would pull off a remarkable feat in winning the title and have leading scorer Olivier Giroud, 18 goals, to thank for much of their success.

Reigning champions Lille are creeping ever closer, too, and are now just four points behind PSG in third.

Belgian winger Eden Hazard, tipped for an off-season move to a major European club, has been in blistering form lately with five goals and four assists in his past five matches.

He is second on the scoring charts with 14 goals and will need to continue his recent run against a miserly Brest defence on Saturday if Lille are to have legitimate claims to back-to-back titles.

Lyon are at home to Auxerre and lead Toulouse (fifth) on goal difference in the race for a Europa League spot.

Toulouse head to face Valenciennes on Saturday after their six-game undefeated streak was broken in a 2-1 loss to Lille last week.

In other matches on Saturday, Ajaccio host Saint-Etienne, Dijon welcome Nancy while Evian entertain Stade Rennes.

In the remaining fixtures on Sunday, Caen do battle with Bordeaux while Nice and Lorient look to creep closer to safety in their clash.
