Skrtel keen to keep scoring

4 April 2012 20:12

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel wants to score more goals after beating a personal record by netting four times so far this season.

The centre-back had not been known for his prowess in front of goal but has chipped in at key moments during a season which has seen Liverpool struggle to hit the net.

The Slovakian is keen to keep improving and singled out his goal in the Carling Cup final against Cardiff City as one of the most special during his time on Merseyside.

"It's the most I've scored in a season because usually I don't get too many," the Slovakian told LFC Magazine.

"I think I got one in my second full season here, then I got two. So I wanted to get three this season. I've got four at the moment and I'm happy with that.

"My strike against Cardiff wasn't the nicest goal but it was special to score in a final at Wembley. My friends were very happy for me, they all congratulated me.

"In the past I've got into decent positions and not taken the chances, maybe I've had more luck this season because I've been able to take them."

Despite the club's poor form in the Premier League, they have the opportunity to seal a third Wembley appearance this season if they win their FA Cup semi-final on April 14.

And Skrtel is relishing the opportunity to face rivals Everton at the national stadium, a ground which he claims is the best he has ever played at.

"I wanted it to be Everton, I've played in lots of derbies now and having a Merseyside derby at Wembley will be brilliant," he said.

"I've played in some great stadiums like the Santiago Bernabeu, the Emirates, Wembley. I would probably go for Wembley as my favourite - it's a special place for me."
