Ligue 1 wrap: Nancy knock off PSG, Saint-Etienne stunned

2 April 2012 16:56

Paris Saint-Germain failed to reclaim top spot in Ligue 1 after a 2-1 loss to Nancy on Saturday, while Saint-Etienne were surprise losers.

Carlo Ancelotti's PSG fell behind when Bakaye Traore opened the scoring, before Mohamed Sissoko's goal changed the course of the encounter at Stade Marcel Picot.

PSG looked the more likely to snatch a winner, but it was Yohan Mollo who struck late on to give Nancy a hard-fought victory.

A lively Nancy side enjoyed the better of the early exchanges and grabbed the lead with their first meaningful attack as Traore poked home after neat lead-up work from Mollo, who was a constant threat.

There was little change in PSG's lacklustre approach after half-time, but the equalising goal sparked the title contenders into life.

Sissoko headed in Sylvain Armand's cross in the 50th minute as the momentum swung in PSG's favour.

The visitors piled on the pressure but were unable to find a goal, and Mollo made them pay in the 89th minute.

After a counter-attack, Mollo placed a shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the area to condemn PSG to their first league defeat under Ancelotti.

With Montpellier inactive this weekend, PSG will remain equal on points with the league leaders but second on goal difference.

In other matches, Saint-Etienne's European chances were dealt a blow after a 3-2 loss at home to Nice.

Max Gradel and Anthony Mounier traded first-half goals before Sylvain Marchal put the hosts ahead on 42 minutes.

But Mounier equalised just before the hour-mark, and Francois Clerc snatched three points for Nice with an 89th-minute goal.

The loss leaves Christophe Galtier's men four points adrift of fourth-placed Toulouse.

Bottom-placed Auxerre registered their first league win of 2012 as Kamel Chafni and Dennis Oliech netted in their 2-0 victory at home to Valenciennes.

Sochaux took another step towards moving out of the relegation zone as Sloan Privat's 82nd-minute winner helped them to a 2-1 victory over Brest.

Bordeaux were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to Dijon, while Brice Dja Djedje scored the only goal in Evian TG's 1-0 win against Lorient.
