Champions League Group B wrap: Inter suffer Turkish shock

15 September 2011 11:13

Turkish club Trabzonspor handed Inter Milan a shock Champions League defeat in Italy while Lille drew with CSKA Moscow in Group B.

Trabzonspor highlighted they were not in the competition to make up the numbers after replacing Fenerbahce due to an ongoing match-fixing scandal, the Super Lig runners-up finding a winner from Czech right-back Ondrej Celustka on 76 minutes.

The result piled misery on 2010 Champions League winners Inter and their new coach Gian Piero Gasperini, despite the Italian outfit dominating at the San Siro.

After stinging criticism following their opening Serie A defeat to Palermo over the weekend, Gasperini opted for a conventional back four but it failed to make a difference as the hosts squandered openings and conceded from Trabzonspor's only chance of note.

Mauro Zarate brought Inter to life on the half-hour with a string of chances. He forced a save from Tolga Zengin at the near post before the Trabzonspor goalkeeper smothered another shot minutes later, again from forward Zarate.

A frustrated Gasperini introduced Argentines Diego Milito and Ricardo Alvarez in front of a sparse and increasingly agitated crowd, but it failed to make an impact.

Celustka swooped on a rebound after Halil Altintop's shot hit the bar, firing across Julio Cesar from a tight angle to pick up three crucial points for the visitors.

Lille surrendered a 2-0 lead at home to CSKA Moscow in a disappointing 2-2 draw for the French champions.

Rudi Garcia's men dominated the opening stanza with Belgian winger Edin Hazard menacing CSKA's defence before Moussa Sow scored a superb back heel for the opener on 45 minutes.

Benoit Pedretti added a deserved second after half-time before former England international Joe Cole came on for Lille.

At that stage the win looked all but assured but Seydou Doumbia's late double revived the Russian side and secured them an unlikely point.
