Two first-half penalties were enough to secure the three points for Benfica as they defeated Vitoria Guimaraes 2-1 in the Liga Sagres.
Oscar Cordozo scored two penalties and missed another spot kick all in the firs half as Benfica took a 2-0 lead into the break.
Edgar pegged one back for Guimaraes on 61 minutes, but the visitors could not find an equaliser in the closing stages.
Benfica move back up to second, two points behind leaders Porto, who have won their opening four fixtures.
Sporting Lisbon staged a remarkable comeback, recovering from two goals down to win 3-2 against Pacos de Ferreira.
A brace for Michel looked to have given the home side the three points, but the dismissal of Nuno Santos on 71 minutes for a second yellow card changed the complexion of the match.
It took Sporting just five minutes to make the most of their numerical advantage, with substitute Marat Izmailov reducing the deficit, before Elias struck three minutes later to level the match at 2-2.
A substitute was at it again with Ricky van Wolfswinkel scoring in the 84th minute to secure all three points for Sporting in a memorable win.
