Copa Sudamericana: Estudiantes 0 Arsenal 1

7 September 2011 12:07

Arsenal progressed from the second round of the Copa Sudamericana despite a 1-0 defeat to Estudiantes on Tuesday.

A 2-0 first-leg win for Arsenal proved enough to earn them their spot in the next stage, although there were some nervy moments at the end for the winners.

The first leg of the all-Argentine clash had been decided by second-half goals and it was the same in the reverse fixture as both sides went to the break goalless.

It was Matias Sanchez who broke the deadlock for the hosts, delighting the crowd at the Estadio Cuidad de La Plata.

Sanchez netted after 63 minutes, giving Estudiantes almost half an hour to score again and force the match to extra-time.

But it was not to be as a fiery end to the match saw the scoreline stay the same, with Mariano Gonzalez given a second yellow card and sent off.

The visitors, who were desperately trying to hang on for victory, had five of their players yellow carded in the last 15 minutes but they held on for a draw, ensuring their progression.
