Eliseu celebrates in style for Portugal

8 October 2011 20:55

Portugal's Eliseu says scoring his debut goal in the 5-3 Euro 2012 qualifying win against Iceland on Friday was one of the best days of his career.

The Malaga winger played at left-back, where he has played for his club on numerous occasions, grabbing his goal in the 87th minute.

Eliseu also added two assists in an impressive display and despite his pride at scoring, the 28-year-old highlighted the importance of the victory.

"I think it's one of the best days of my career. I'm glad it helped the team because it's very important that we won," he told UEFA.com.

Paulo Bento fielded Eliseu at left-back in the absence of Fabio Coentrao, yet the player refused to be drawn on whether he will provide competition to the Real Madrid star in the position.

"He's (Coentrao) a great player. You have to remember that about Fabio. But the most important thing is that we achieved our objective - to win this game," he added.

"We weren't brilliant but we did the job. We could have made life easier for ourselves. The boss pointed out that we conceded three goals from dead balls, though offensively we played very well. We knew they were dangerous from set pieces."

Portugal head to Copenhagen to face Denmark in their final game of Group H on Tuesday, knowing they need to avoid defeat to qualify for next summer's European Championships.
