Messi leads Maradona condolences

21 November 2011 17:01

Lionel Messi has offered his support to former Argentina team coach Diego Maradona after the death of his mother, Dona Tota.

Maradona's mother died on Saturday and the Al Wasl coach flew home to Buenos Aires immediately in preparation for Monday's memorial service.

Barcelona forward Messi has joined those who have expressed their sympathies to Maradona, releasing a statement through his personal foundation on Sunday.

"The Leo Messi Foundation wishes to express its profound condolences for the passing of Senora Dalma Salvadora Franco, Dona Tota, and accompanies Diego Maradona and all his family in their grief with total solidarity," read the statement, published on the foundation's official website.

As well as Messi, Maradona has been comforted by some of the biggest names in Argentine sport.

Boca Juniors legends Martin Palermo and Guillermo Barros Schelotto and tennis star Juan Martin del Potro visited him to pay their respects, as did River Plate coach Matias Almeyda and Getafe goalkeeper Oscar Ustari.
