CAF World Cup qualifying: Congo DR find beat, Adebayor back for Togo

16 November 2011 02:23

Congo DR booked their place in the second round of African qualifying for the 2014 World Cup with an 8-2 aggregate thrashing of Swaziland.

After a 3-1 victory away from home in the first leg on November 11, Congo DR ran out 5-1 winners in Tuesday's return fixture.

TP Mazembe striker Tresor Mputu and former club colleague Dioko Kaluyituka - now with Al-Ahly Doha - netted two goals apiece for Congo DR in the match at the Stade des Martyrs.

Yves Diba Ilunga scored the fifth goal in Kinshasa following Sidumo Shongwe's consolation strike for Swaziland.

The heavy win sees Congo DR progress to the group stage of African Football Confederation qualifying, with a place in the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil at stake.

Also on Tuesday, Kenya defeated Seychelles 4-0 at home to complete a 7-0 aggregate win.

With former captain Emmanuel Adebayor back in the fold, Togo managed a 1-0 win away to Guinea-Bissau, progressing 2-1 on aggregate.

Congo were held 1-1 in their match at home to Sao Tome and Principe, but strolled through courtesy of their 5-0 victory in the first leg.

Rwanda downed Eritrea 3-1 away from home to win through 4-2 on aggregate.

Tanzania lost 1-0 at home to Chad, but still progress on the away goals rule thanks to their 2-1 win in the first leg.

Madagascar came from behind in the match to beat Equatorial Guinea 2-1, but they were unable to prevent bowing out 3-2 on aggregate.

Burundi also managed a comeback, and unlike Madagascar, theirs was not in vain.

They came from behind to win 2-1 at home to Lesotho, with Saidi Tama Nduwimana's 88th-minute penalty sending his team through on away goals, 2-2 on aggregate.

Elsewhere, a Lazarus Kaimbi double helped Namibia to a 4-0 rout of Djibouti and capped an 8-0 aggregate win.

And Mozambique defeated Comoros 4-1 to close out a 5-1 aggregate result.
