Copa Sudamericana: Velez Sarsfield 3 Santa Fe 2

11 November 2011 13:25

Velez Sarsfield advanced to the Copa Sudamericana semi-finals 4-3 on aggregate after a controversial second leg against Santa Fe.

Following their 1-1 draw in the first leg in Colombia, Velez leaped out to a two-goal advantage early on at the Estadio Jose Amalfitani in Buenos Aires on Thursday courtesy of a Guillermo Franco brace inside the opening 20 minutes.

The Argentinean team took their two-goal buffer to the break, but Wilson Gutierrez's side struck back to take the advantage midway through the second half.

Jonathan Copete kicked off the comeback with a goal in the first minute after the interval, before an Omar Perez penalty put the Colombians ahead on away goals with the tie all-square at 3-3 after 68 minutes.

But Velez got out of trouble when referee Enrique Osses pointed to the spot once more - this time for the hosts - and Juan Martinez netted the penalty to send his side through to the final four.

Ricardo Gareca's men join Brazilian outfit Vasco da Gama in the semis, with quarter-finals between Arsenal and Universidad de Chile, and Libertad and LDU Quito, still to be decided.
