More arrests in Turkish match-fixing scandal

7 July 2011 15:59

A further 15 people have been jailed in Turkey as investigations continue into match-fixing in the country's Super Lig.

Executives from top Turkish clubs including Sivasspor, Eskisehirspor and reigning champions Fenerbahce are among them, bringing the total number of people jailed to 22.

The latest developments cast major doubts on plans for the 2011/12 league season, scheduled to begin next month.

A total of 61 people, including both players and staff, have been detained and questioned by authorities following raids last Sunday.

Up to 19 matches are thought to be under investigation, with allegations of intimidation, bribery and the involvement of criminal gangs.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has called for the investigation to be completed quickly to minimise further damage to the reputation of the sport.

"At the moment, an investigation is being carried out based on documents and information," Erdogan said.

"I hope it will conclude as soon as possible so that this incident does not harm our international vision and stain the country's image internationally."

The reported widespread corruption in Turkish football comes just days after FIFA president Sepp Blatter vowed to stamp out match-fixing in Zimbabwe.
