Australian forward Allsopp splits with DC United

15 November 2010 19:09

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Much-travelled former Australian international Danny Allsopp left MLS club D.C. United by mutual consent after just one season, the US club said Monday.

The 32-year-old played in 23 Major League Soccer matches, 18 of them as a starter, and was the club's joint leading scorer with five goals.

"We would like to thank Danny for his contributions to D.C. United and we wish him well in the future," United general manager Dave Kasper said.

United went 6-20 with four drawn last season, the worst record in the 16-team North American league.

Alsopp's 217,500 dollars in guaranteed money from United was the most of any player who spent the full season with the US capital club, the Washington Post reported.

Allsopp's 15-year career includes spells with English clubs Manchester City, Hull and Notts County. He won three caps for Australia, the first in a 2007 friendly against Uruguay.

The Australian joined United last January from Qatari side Al-Rayyan, where he scored six goals in 12 matches. He spent the prior four seasons with the Melbourne Victory.
