MLS weekend review

24 May 2010 06:04

(GSM) - Columbus Crew opened a gap at the top of Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference on Sunday with a 1-0 victory away to Kansas City.

Columbus entered the day with a two-point lead in the East ahead of New York Red Bulls, who spent Sunday beating Juventus, 3-1, in a friendly.

Just two days after besting New York on the road, Columbus faced another test at Kansas City. But the match went to half-time scoreless as both sides struggling to find their attacking rhythm.

But, in the 64th minute, super sub Emilio Rentería bagged his second goal in as many games to give the Crew the narrow 1-0 win.

The win is the fourth straight for Columbus, while Kansas City have now gone six without a victory.

On Saturday, defending champions Real Salt Lake also got their fourth straight win as they left it late to win, 2-1, at Chivas USA.

Chris Wingert's goal just before half-time gave Salt Lake the edge, but Justin Braun equalized with 10 minutes to play for the Los Angeles side.

With the match seemingly destined for a draw, however, Edgar Espíndola struck with a minute to go to snatch all three points for the visitors.

Though in second place in the Western Conference, Salt Lake are still 10 points back of Los Angeles Galaxy, who have opened with a torrid eight wins and two draws in 10 games.
