Brazil lead Chile 2-0 at half-time

28 June 2010 21:30

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Goals by centre-back Juan and striker Luis Fabiano gave Brazil a 2-0 half-time lead against Chile in their World Cup last 16 clash at Ellis Park on Monday.

Brazil are aiming to win their sixth World Cup title and victory here would give them a quarter-final berth against the Netherlands on Friday in Port Elizabth.

Chile made a bright start, but Brazil soon got into their stride as Luis Fabiano and Gilberto Silva both forced Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo into early saves.

Brazil had a loud appeal for a penalty on 27 minutes when defender Pablo Contreras took away Lucio's legs in the penalty area, but referee Howard Webb waved play on.

Real Madrid's Kaka, back in the side after serving a one-match ban for his red card against the Ivory Coast, picked up the first yellow card when he went for the ball, but caught a Chilean attacker on the ankle on 30 minutes.

Brazil took the lead on 35 minutes when Maicon swung in a corner and Juan rose the highest to head past Bravo.

Luis Fabiano made it 2-0 four minutes later after Kaka took a pass from Robinho on the left wing and slid the ball through for the Sevilla star to draw Bravo and slot home.
