Togo goalie Obilale: 'I'm a miracle'

25 January 2010 14:35

(GSM) - Kodjovi Obilale is recovering well from his gunshot wounds. The Togo goalkeeper was initially reported as dead after the attack on Togo's teambus but emergency treatment in South Africa saved his life.

At first, it look like Obilale would die of his wounds he sustained in Angola, but he was flown to a South African hospital immediately. There, in the Johannesburg based Milpark hospital, he received surgery on wounds in the lower back and abdomen. Finally, the doctors managed to save Obilale's life.

"I'm a miracle," the 25-year-old keeper told L'Equipe. "I'm alive, I'm doing well, I'm talking, eating and breathing. I want to go back home.

"When the tension increases in me, I lose it, I want to break everything. I want to see my children again and be back with those closest to me."

Togo's assistant coach and its squad spokesman were killed when the team's convoy was ambushed by separatist guerillas in the Angolan enclave of Cabinda after it had crossed the border from Congo on January 8.

The squad was on its way to attend the Africa Cup of Nations. Togo, on the advice of their national government, withdrew from the competition.
