Fabregas rejects new Arsenal deal; eyes Barca move

8 February 2010 11:50

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has targeted a move to Barelona.

(GSM) - Cesc Fabregas has rejected a new contract at Arsenal. The Gunners offered their Spanish captain a weekly wage of £127000 but Fabregas wants to join Barcelona next summer.

Spanish newspaper Sport suggest that Fabregas’ return to the Camp Nou is about more than just "purely economic issues." He has made his desire clear to his representatives and is simply waiting for both clubs to sort out the transfer.

Barcelona are reportedly willing to pay €50 million to Arsenal for the 22-year-old midfielder.

Sport also reports that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is realistic over the move and knows he is unlikely to lure Fabregas to the Spanish capital.

Fabregas should join Real Madrid or AC Milan. Is this guy still 22? I though he was 22 four years ago.

On a different topic, am I the only USA resident on this site who got buried by that huge snow storm along the Mid-Atlantic States on Saturday? Even during my 38-year permanence in Canada I’ve not seen so much snow fall in a single storm. Along the Maryland-Pennsylvania state line we were lucky. We only got 22" of snow within a twelve-hour span. Baltimore, Washington and Philadelphia got a lot more. No golf for me for at least the next 2 weeks. I wonder what happened to the theory of global warming.

I cant believe that any top players still want in at Arsenal. I think a top 4 finish is respectable, but how long will their silverware drought last. They don't necessarily need to win the EPL, but they need to win something and at least show up to play against the top English clubs. v Man U 3-0, v Chelsea 2-0...come on!

treee3, Arsenal can't beat against the top clubs in EPL but Arsenal "SURELY" can beat Assy Milan "EASILY" either 3-0 or 5-0 based on their yesterday performance ;D

Wenger is guilty here somehow. I do not want to dig into Arsenal's bills and incomes, but after van Persie injury it was obvious that without class striker Arsenal can not manage to get championship. That was Wenger who constantly was saing, 'hey People look, we are most scoring team in the PL, so why would we need to get a striker?'

Every big team has at least one big attacker, but somehow Arsenal does not have one in the moment.

BTW there come captaincy change times, so I would think it over if Fabregas should still own it.

I can't blame Fabregas rejecting a new contract at Arsenal. Wenger has taken the club backwards in the last 4 years and about time he gets the sack! He is not ready to bring in quality players to replace duds like Almunia, Denilson etc.

We do not even have a striker at the moment and it is so unfair on Arshavin playing upfront on his own because he is more of an attacking midfield player than a striker.

I wish Barcelona will take him away from London to see an Arsenal struggling with Stoke , Hull ...etc . If we get Ribbery and canales , probably Negredo also back next year , adding Granero (supported by 90% of fans who want him in the starting team ) , Higuain and all the stars we have already , there's no place for Fabrigas , but my wish is just to see Wenger struggling .

This surprises me, and yet, it doesn't. I was certain that Cesc would stay on at Arsenal for at least another year, if not 2 in an attempt to see if they could bring in a top class striker to give the team some venom.

northmantif3,

I agree that Arsenal have struggled without van Persie, but he's not really a front man, let alone a world class one. He should be a support striker at best, but I think his injury problems are due in large part to playing in a central position. With his speed and skill, he's constantly getting rough tackles from bigger defenders, and it's obvious his body can't handle it. I would like to see him out on the wing, a la Ryan Giggs in his prime. Arsenal really need to bring in a player like Vucinic (good with his back to goal, and with the size and technique to be a threat) or Benzema (missed the boat on that one eh?). They also need to scrap this Theo Walcott Project they're on, as he hasn't made much headway at the club.

I have always appreciated Arsenal football under Wenger, but I'm afraid he may be running out of time. If Fabregas leaves, there's absolutely no way to replace him, and without a bona fide target man, that team is headed for some dark days.

We should let him go if he has made up his mind to leave , we should stop looking at Cesc as if he is the only man in the Arsenal team. We believe in Wenger and we believe in the team spirit. Player go Player come.

Wenger has made the best that he could with Fabregas and the team that he built around him. He got that team play a CL final and despite the important losses he kept his team always a contenter for a CL spot. It's not easy to beat teams like ManU or Chelsea, especially with such young players, so I don't know what more you could ask Wenger for at this time.

It won't be only difficult for Arsenal w/o Fabregas, but also for Fabregas in a new team, even if that is his "home" Barcelona. In a team that has already Xavi and Iniesta, he will find himself in a different role and with different responsibilities. And expectation will be much higher than at Arsenal. With Arsenal, you can afford being third or fourth in the PL, but with Barça you can't even afford being on second spot. Even a player like Henry had to struggle to establish himself. Fabregas will be no exception and at Barça nothing is guaranteed. Fabregas status changes from "best player of the team" to "one of the potential big stars in a team that features several world class stars".
