Liverpool progress in Europa League despite Reina howler

2 December 2010 18:09

PARIS (AFP) - Liverpool reached the Europa League last 32 on Thursday with a 1-1 draw at Steaua Bucharest, but a blunder by Spanish goalkeeper Pepe Reina allowed the Romanians to claim a crucial point which put them closer to the next round.

Milan Jovanovic headed Roy Hodgson's team ahead after 19 minutes from a Ryan Babel cross but Eder Bomfim equalised on the hour mark when his header slipped under Reina's dive.

Sotirios Kyrgiakos almost claimed all three points for a Liverpool side showing eight changes from their last outing, but his header hit the crossbar.

Reina admitted he had been at fault for Steaua's goal.

"I thought one of their players was offside for the goal but I've watched replays and it's my fault. It's my mistake and I have to handle that and get through it," Reina told ESPN.

"I definitely should have reacted much better than I did. I will handle the mistake and improve."

Reina also praised Liverpool's new look side which saw youngsters like Martin Kelly, Danny Wilson, Dani Pacheco and Jonjo Shelvey given rare outings.

"We have to give them credit because we made a great effort," said the Spaniard.

"We have players out there with not much experience and they showed great character and helped us get the point we needed."

Utrecht and Napoli drew 3-3 in the other Group K game.

Borussia Dortmund defeated Karpaty Lviv 3-0 to stay in contention in Group J.

Shinji Kagawa, Mats Hummels and Robert Lewandowski scored to give the runaway Bundesliga leaders all three points.

But with Paris Saint-Germain assured of progressing after defeating Sevilla 4-2, Dortmund can only follow them into the knockout stages by winning in Andalusia in two weeks' time.

CSKA Moscow celebrated Russia's victory in the race to host the 2018 World Cup by crushing Lausanne-Sport 5-1.

They had already scored three times in each of their previous four Group F outings, and took just 40 minutes to reach that figure again on Thursday with Tomas Necid, Sekou Oliseh and Zoran Tozic all on target.

Alan Dzagoev and Necid added to the total after the break.

Falcao scored a hat-trick as Porto ended Rapid Vienna's hopes of progressing from Group L with a 3-1 win.

Besiktas secured their place with a 2-1 win over CSKA Sofia in the group's other game.
