Three-star West Brom edge closer to Premier League

2 April 2010 18:20

LONDON (AFP) - West Brom cruised past Leicester 3-0 on Friday to edge closer to automatic promotion to the Premier League with an eighth successive home win equalling their best previous run set in 1949.

West Brom are 12 points clear of third-placed Nottingham Forest who only have another 18 left to play for, and could even be promoted on Monday should results go their way over the next three days.

James Morrison fired the home side into the lead with a half volley before Robert Koren doubled the advantage in first-half injury-time.

Slovenian international Koren grabbed his second of the match late on.

"It was important to win and it will be important to win our remaining home games," said West Brom boss Roberto Di Matteo whose side are a point behind leaders Newcastle but have played two games more.

"It was a great performance considering the importance of the game. The first half was quite even and we were probably lucky to go ahead.

"The second goal was a good time to score, to go in with a 2-0 lead, and the third was just a bonus."

Blackpool boosted their bid to land a play-off place with a 4-2 victory at struggling Scunthorpe.

They took the lead through Andrew Wright's 22nd-minute own goal before Grant McCann equalised from the penalty spot three minutes into the second half.

Seamus Coleman restored Blackpool's lead in the 77th minute before DJ Campbell struck twice in three minutes to seal the points.

Gary Hooper reduced the deficit in the final moments but Scunthorpe remain five points above the relegation zone.
