Velez Sarsfield and Botafogo victorious in Sudamericana

Velez Sarsfield of Argentina and Botafogo of Brazil are close to a spot in the quarter finals of the Copa Nissan Sudamericana following first leg wins in the round of sixteen.

Chilean side Union Española were heading for victory at Velez, but couldn't avoid a late turn-around. Velez had taken the lead through Hernan Lopez in the 24th minute but goals from David Ramirez and Raul Estevez allowed Union to defend a 1-2 advantage.

But an own goal from Diego Rosende cost Union their victory, and things became even worse for the guests when Rolando Zarate netted for 3-2 in the second minute of added time.

Botafogo hosted Emelec Guiyaquil of Equador and earned a 2-0 victory. Renato scored just before the break, and Andre Lima added a second four minutes after the hour.

Peruvian outfit Alianza Atletico Sullana held Fluminense to a slightly surprising 2-2 draw. The Brazilians went ahead through Luiz Alberto in the sixth minute but Saulo Aponte (49th) and Marcio Valverde (71th) then turned things around for the hosts. Dario Conca scored four minutes after Alianza's last goal, for a 2-2 final result.

Internacional managed only a 1-1 draw against Universidad de Chile. In Porto Alegre, the visitors even went ahead through Walter Montillo in the 24th minute, but Kleber limited the damage with an equalizer in the 77th.
