Venezuela hold Chile, small win for Paraguay
Chile were held to a 2-2 draw by Venezuela in South American World Cup qualifying action this Saturday, while Paraguay earned a narrow but valuable win over Bolivia.
The Chileans had a second place to defend in their match with Venezuela, while the visiting side hope for at least a point to keep World Cup hopes alive.
Chile were first to put the ball past the opposing keeper, as Arturo Vidal opened the score after just ten minutes.
Venezuela then turned things around with Giancarlo Maldonado equalizing in minute 34 and Jose Rey converting a free kick just before the half time whistle.
Chile did get a point however, as Rodrigo Millar made it 2-2 eight minutes into the second half.
Paraguay climb to shared second place, joining Chile, after a 1-0 win over Bolivia. The only goal of the match was scored by Salvador Cabañas from the penalty spot on 45 minutes.
Based on current standings in this qualifying zone, Brazil (already qualified), Paraguay, Chile and Argentina would earn direct qualification for next year's finals, and Colombia are in line to face a CONCACAF team in a play-off.
