Real go top to put pressure on Barca

21 November 2009 20:25

Sevilla FC´s Jesus Navas (L) clashes with CD Tenerife´s Pablo Sicillia (R) during their Spanish first league football match at the Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez Stadium in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on the Spanish Canary island of Tenerife. Sevilla won 2-1.

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid warmed up for next Sunday's 'El Clasico' with a 1-0 home win over Racing Santander on Saturday to move top of the table, two points clear of champions and arch rivals Barcelona.

Argentine Gonzalo Higuain's goal after 22 minutes sealed a nervy Real victory that hardly appeased a Santiago Bernabeu crowd seething at the embarrassing Kings Cup exit to third division Alcorcon in the last home match.

Barcelona can reclaim top spot with vicory at Athletic Bilbao later on Saturday before the eagerly-anticipated clash between Real and Barca at Camp Nou next Sunday.

"It is always complicated after a two-week break and coming off the back of the Kings Cup loss," explained Real coach Manuel Pellegrini.

"When you get towards the end of the match with only a goal cushion it is always risky but we had several chances and also hit the post twice.

"Now we have to concentrate on FC Zurich (in the Champions League) and then we can look at the Barcelona game."

Real began without the sidelined Cristiano Ronaldo for the tenth consecutive game while captain Raul started on the substitutes bench for the third successive league game.

Xabi Alonso rattled the post for Real in the opening stages while former Liverpool team-mate Alvaro Arbeloa saw his overhit cross clip the same post.

A Real goal looked on the cards and they got a helping hand when goalkeeper Tono foolishly pushed Kaka's cross into the danger zone and Higuain had an easy tap in on 22 minutes.

It was a nightmare start for Racing coach Miguel Angel Portugal in his first game in charge but Real didn't build on their encouraging start.

Luis Garcia had three good shooting chances for Racing but failed to hit the target on each occasion.

Higuain should have scored his second on 70 minutes but Tono pulled off a fine save to keep his side in the match.

Racing then had what looked a perfectly valid equaliser ruled out for offside leaving Racing goalscorer Sergio Canales dumbfounded.

Real now host FC Zurich in the Champions League on Wednesday needing a win with AC Milan on the same points and Marseille just a point behind.

Barcelona are also in Champions League action at home to Inter Milan on Tuesday in a must-win game for the holders.

Sevilla kept up their own title charge with a 2-1 win at promoted Tenerife to stay three points behind leaders Real.

Argentine winger Diego Perotti and Brazilian Renato were on target as Sevilla kept pace with Barcelona and Real.

The 21-year-old Perotti, who won his first cap for Argentina this month, struck the opener on 32 minutes before Renato added a second three minutes after the break.

Manolo Jimenez's side now travel to Unirea Urziceni in the Champions League on Tuesday with qualification for the knockout stage secure.

Elsewhere Deportivo La Coruna moved up to fourth with a dramatic 2-1 home win over Atletico Madrid.

Mexican Andres Guardado converted a controversial penalty five minutes into stoppage time to down Atletico who stay in the bottom three with coach Quique Sanchez Flores still waiting for his first league win in charge.

"We weren't expecting that ending but things like that can happen in football," said Flores. "It is not going to be easy to bounce back in the league."

The game looked poised to end 1-1 but Pablo Ibanez conceded a penalty at the death and Guardado made no mistake.

Atletico forward Sergio "Kun" Aguero was furious about the decision with coach Flores coming onto the pitch to calm him down while Atletico midfielder Cleber Santana was sent off for complaining.

As another person here is fond of saying about Inter, Real are now on top because Barcelona is letting them win with their mistakes and injuries. Well it's only one point anyway, not 8 like Inter. Plus Athletic Bilbao at home can't be compared to Racing Satander playing at Madrid. I think ultimately Barcelona will again win La Liga this year, but probably not the Champions League. I would like it go to Inter, but if I'm being fair, I would say that it will go to Chelsea this year.

Higuain was off side, when he got the pass that allowed him to score Real's goal. And Racings's goal was perfectly legit !!!

Real are not playing well and I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't get past the group stage in CL.

How much longer will Pellegrini be allowed to stay ? Florentino Perez is getting impatient wih this guy and I reckon he'll be gone before Xmas.

Giorgio, why do you say that Higuain was off side? Watch the replay and you will see that when Higuain scored, there was a Santander player on the goal line right beside the goalie. It was a legit goal.

Giorgio, I forgot to mention that the Santander defender retreated to the goal line before Higuain received the pass (a header) from Garay.

Also the goal scored by Santander was offside. In fact, there were 2 players in the offside position. I'm not sure if you watched the same game I did.

Fred,

I don't know which game you were watching, but I was definitely watching Real-Racing, on the Spanish TV channel.

And the video replay clearly showed (also confirmed by the Spanish commentator) that Higuain was offside. The video replay also showed that the Racing player who scored the goal that was disallowed was onside when the ball was passed to him. There was another Racing player in a "passive" offside position, but, according to current rules, that is allowed.

Giorgio, now I we were not watching the same game!

Correction: Now I know we were not watching the same game!

Some people here watch highlights , in fact some older highlights of last year .

You didn't watch the same game . Yesterday Santander's goalkeeper made a stupid mistake by pushing with a stupid way Kaka's cross and gave the ball to Higuain as a gift to score .

In front of Higuain there was 2 defenders and the goalkeeper who gave to him the ball , so if this is an offside then I have to learn what is an offside again .

In Sanatander's goal , if you watch the action well you will see that it was not Canales who was offside but Geijo . Here there's no talk about this game , but everyone does agree that Santander always fight well against Madrid or Barcelona , the same repetition of last year's games .

When it's Inter fan who talks about football you must take his comments as a joke .

Madrid fans were unhappy yesterday with 1-0 but I think they are demanding too much , for Pellegrini it was important to secure the result but for fans they wanted more show .

That's the difference between the fans . Some fans are not satisfied even they win 9 champions leagues , but some fans are satisfied even they won it only 2 times , and the last time since sixties .

Real Madrid goal was NOt off-side. Santander's goal was not off-side, too. Real Madrid played well and deserved to win.

Giorgio,

a lesson for you; Don't drink and watch a game. it makes you silly, boy.

FYI; Santander is NOT an Italian team. calm down

Giorgio

23 November 2009 06:36

Fred,

I'm a little confused.

In one post you claim that the Racing player who scored was offside and in another post you claim that he was onside.

I wonder who was drinking here ?

P.S.: I'm a social drinker and when I do have a drink I always drink in moderation and never get intoxicated.

I understand if someone tells me he was drunk when he posted here and I wont tell him again you don't know anything about football.

My english is not that good to explain some things but they say a picture is worth a 1000 words , so here is a video which shows the goal of Madrid and I hope some people will realise how some guys here have been ridiculous by talking about the game named football .

Giorgio, I believe the point of contention is the following sentence:

“Also the goal scored by Santander was offside. In fact, there were 2 players in the offside position. I'm not sure if you watched the same game I did.”

You must have taken the first word "Also" as meaning Similarly.

Try the other meaning, "In addition."

Giorgio, yesterday I wasn't drunk . . . maybe just a little imbibed. I had one bottle of wine and 6 beers. That’s only half of my regular daily intake!

Giorgio

23 November 2009 13:30

Fred,

Take it easy, too much vino is not good for you. Please take care of yourself, one bottle of wine and 6 beers a day in not good news for your liver.

I also enjoy a glass of red wine with dinner (2 glasses max), but I never drink on an empty stomach.

GIORGIO , THE RIGHT ADVICE FOR YOU IS : DONT SMOKE TOO MUCH PERKELE :D :D CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW GONZALO HIGUAIN WAS OFFSIDE ??

Giorgio

23 November 2009 15:26

Chlesea4ever,

What is perkele ? I have never heard of this stuff (whatever it may be) before.

Do you by any chance smoke it ?

Avi82

23 November 2009 17:57

Chelsea4ever,

I think Giorgio was "suprisingly" joking. See, even Italian "bad" boy, Giorgio, has a sense of humour which is good!...

By the way, how can you smoke perkele? I searched it, and found out it means "devil". right?

Hah hah ha......

Giorgio,

please continue to joke. I personally fed up with your "angry angry Italian boy" persona.
