MADRID (AFP) - Spanish police on Wednesday detained for questioning former Real Madrid president Lorenzo Sanz, who is suspected of taking artwork from Spain to Italy without the proper authorisation, Spanish media reported.

Plainclothed detectives detained the 66-year-old real estate magnate at around noon in central Madrid and took him to a police station where he was questioned for several hours in the company of his lawyer, news radio Cadena Ser reported.

He was released without any bail conditions.

Sanz told the Europa Press news agency that "third parties" who he did not name wanted to auction off the paintings at an auction house in Venice and he was called in for questioning because they were taken abroad "without permission".

"I have nothing to do with this matter. They were the ones who took care of all procedures for the auction," he said.

Sanz was the president of Real between 1995 and 2000. He used his own money to bring in star players to the club such as Croatian striker Davor Suker and Montenegrin midfielder Predrag Mijatovic.

The club won two Champions League titles, in 1998 and 2000, during his time in office.

His detention comes with big-spending Real being ridiculed by the press for being eliminated from the Spanish Cup by third division side Alcorcon.

Real crashed out of the competition on Tuesday night when they could only manage a 1-0 home victory over Alcorcon, a team from the Madrid suburbs, who went through to the last 16 with a 4-1 aggregate score.

This doesn’t surprise me one little bit, first Calderon now this goon. Fergie was correct in his assessment of these big time Charlie’s “mobsters” and corrupt ones at that!

Newty again with his garbage . What Sanz did is normal but maybe he failed to ask for the right autorisation to take them to Italy ,the Brigade of Historical Patrimony asked him questions and he was released , so till here he is innocent like everyone else .

Calderon is still in troubles with justice because he tried to win elections with fraud .

Both of them were kicked by Real Madrid , a democratic club where when you fail you get kicked even you are the president , even you used your own money to help the club , your money is just a gift but you can't own the club of fans .

In ManU's case it's different , it's dictatorship , 1 guy alone offered for himself a club of fans, of many generations , and made it like his private home , he can do anything he wants and nobody can kick him , no elections , no change at the head with a democratic way , it's like Omar Bongo in Africa .

Do you think the creators of your club would create it if they knew some man alone will own it ? Well , I understand if it's some fan from Manchester like Silvio in Milan , but from USA came to own a club of Mancunians ?

Holly, you’re doing it again! This story has nothing to do with United or foreign ownership. You really struggle with criticism don’t you? Why are you going on about democracy again, I think we came to a conclusion that you only accept democracy as a good thing when it suits you!

Just a bunch of mobs!

Well , you can't do anything alone even if you want ManU to be like it used to be before . I think I told about Phil from Oldham who lives here now , he told me he can't change things but he can decide not to belong to the same sheep anymore who went to support the Glazers after they supported a club of people .

You’re still doing it holly, really has nothing to do with subject matter does it, you do it all the time but it still doesn’t detract from the fact that your club is run by crooks!

And you obviously don’t know much about United as it has always had a businessman at the helm barring the Plc days.

Newty, I know ManU had businessmen just like every club including Madrid , Milan , Marseille , Ajax or even a simple club in Africa . The difference is that ManU gave total control for the American Jew when Madrid say NO , if you fail we will kick you in 4 years or maybe before that . If you succeed we can give you one more chance , players , coaches , presidents we change them all the time that's how the club remain for fans and not for some people only !

If you look the origin meaning of a club you could agree with me , but too late you are stolen already !
