Ancelotti warns of Gunners threat as Fergie fumes

9 November 2009 02:40

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford in Manchester, north-west England. Chelsea head Carlo Ancelotti has rubbed salt into Manchester United´s wounds over their controversial defeat at Chelsea by suggesting Arsenal are just as big a threat as Manchester to his side´s Premier League title ambitions.

LONDON (AFP) - Carlo Ancelotti has rubbed salt into Manchester United's wounds over their controversial defeat at Chelsea by suggesting Arsenal are just as big a threat to his side's Premier League title ambitions.

Chelsea's 1-0 win, sealed by John Terry's late header, allowed Ancelotti's men to open a five-point lead at the top and left his United counterpart, Sir Alex Ferguson, once again aggrieved over his side's treatment at the hands of a referee.

While Ferguson admitted his side now face a tough task in attempting to close the gap on a Chelsea squad that is becoming as rich in confidence as it is in experience, Ancelotti was quick to underline the unexpected vibrancy of Arsenal's challenge as a reminder of the dangers of complacency.

"If Arsenal win their game in hand, they will be within two points of us," he said when asked to speculate on whether the title race was now a two-horse affair.

"I think also Arsenal is doing very well.

"A five-point lead is important, but at the same time, not so important. We have 30 points in 12 matches but we know the season is very long. We have to stay focused."

Chelsea fans' optimism that Ancelotti could emulate Jose Mourinho in wresting the Premier League trophy away from Old Trafford will have been encouraged by the fact that, three months into his first season in England, the Italian has now master-minded wins over both United and Liverpool.

"That is important," Ancelotti said. "But we lost against Wigan and Aston Villa. This means every game is the same. It is always three points and we have to maintain concentration against Manchester United, against all teams.

"It was very difficult to beat Manchester, the match was very balanced for 90 minutes and it was difficult for both teams to create chances to score. Sometimes we lost with the set plays, this time we won."

The set play that decided Sunday's match was a 76th-minute freekick awarded to Chelsea after referee Martin Atkinson -- mistakenly -- judged that Darren Fletcher, who had been outstanding for United, had fouled Ashley Cole close to the left touchline.

Frank Lampard's inswinging delivery was glanced into the net by Terry, although Nicolas Anelka also celebrated as if he had got the final touch.

Either way, Chelsea were fortunate to take all three points after a contest that a depleted United side had controlled for long periods, which only contributed to Ferguson's frustration over the critical free-kick.

"Clearly, Darren Fletcher's won the ball, Ashley Cole's never touched and has jumped up in the air, and then (Didier) Drogba's pulled Brown to the ground for the goal," Ferguson said.

"The referee's position to make the decision was absolutely ridiculous, he can't see anything. He's got a Chelsea player (Joe Cole) standing right in front of him and he doesn't even move.

"That goal shoudn't have been allowed. It was a bad decision, but there's nothing we can do about it. You lose faith in refereeing sometimes, that's the way the players are talking in there. It was a bad one."

Ferguson maintained sufficient composure to acknowledge that United could only blame themselves for failing, over the course of the 90 minutes, to turn their domination of possession into better chances.

"We had great opportunities to get to the edge of the box and some really good chances in and around the box, but we should be finishing it off," the Scot recognised.

"We've only ourselves to blame in that respect. But you do need a break - and we never got the break we needed."

Ferguson also admitted that the setback at Stamford Bridge was far more significant than last month's 2-0 defeat at Liverpool.

"The fact is Chelsea go five points clear of us," he said. "The defeat to Liverpool didn't affect our position in the league, this affects our position in the sense that if we'd have won we'd have gone top."

who wrote this? this sounds like a report from fergie himself... the fact of the matter is, chelsea won, it was a foul, the goal was just (and a great header from terry). fergie should be fined by the FA it seems after every game he fumes at the referees. he's known for keeping his young players' feet on the ground, but lately he can't even keep his own on the ground. and also whoever wrote this thinks united dominated for the whole 90 mins?! they dominated for the first and last 10 mins of the game and that was it. face it fergie, there are 2 teams in the premier league that are better than united chelsea and arsenal.

p.s. GO BLUES!

I was shocked about Fergie's attitude yesterday especially when two Chelsea players hit each other accidently and the referee stopped the game to see if everything is alright , Fergie started shouting and screaming like a bloody crazy because of such decision in the middle of the field .

Anyway , the game was boring before Chelsea scored , it looked clearly United wanted 1 point from London but Ancellotti's side outplayed them and showed that when it comes to big games ManU are too weak in front of Liverpool and Chelsea . For some strange reasons Evans and Valencia didn't get red cards , anyone who has seen the game please tell me that the way they kicked down Carvalho and Terry .

The next games of Valencia and Roma which were showed in Tv saved my day after that boring game .

As per usual Holly you are talking through your backside with your biased anti-United attitude. Firstly you didn’t watch the match you have watched the highlights. If you did watch the match then you, as a self professed football fan, would never ever called yesterdays game boring. It was game with two very, very decent teams with end to end football it was just a crying shame that it was decided by default.

Kaiser, I’m sorry but I’m going to have to disagree with you on the foul issue, never in a million years was that a foul on Cole, Terry’s header was decent but Drogba pulled Brown down in the box and Brown was directly in the passage of the flight of the ball, Drogba was also in an offside position, even though he didn’t touch the ball he was active in an offside position.

Holly why don’t you pose the question on why United didn’t get a penalty when Terry blatantly dragged Valencia down in the first half?

And before anyone accuses me of United bias let it be known I’m currently sat in an office with a number of United and City fans, one Newcastle United Fan, three Scousers, one Evertonian, one Villa fan, one Tranmere Rovers fan, one Bolton Wanderers Fan, one Gooner, one Norwich City fan and more importantly one Chealski fan and every single one of them agree that Chelsea were very, very, very fortunate to get three points from yesterdays game.

I’m always gracious in defeat and with that I congratulate Chelsea but even their fans know that Dick Turpin had the decency to wear a mask!

Newty , better you keep talking about football than trying to guess if people talk from their back side .As usual , you are the one who starts off topic .

If you have seen the highlights , you can see that Chelsea didn't deserve to win , but me I don't pay 62 euros per month to go to watch highlights in the net at work like you do , I understand you because you don't have monthly internet subscription at home , save yourself and say more lies ;)

Well , I went to play football in Saturday and I had chance to watch many games yesterday and the first one was really boring between your favourite club and the blues . I did like to watch them before but not this year and yourself you said it that ManU are not that good right , so how can't you agree with me that the game was boring ? It was played in the middle of the field mostly , I had never time to talk that much to my girlfriend during a football game like yesterday , if all games are like that one I will take a book with when I go to stadium .

We don't need to talk about Fergie who attracted more attention than the game itself , I really pity that guy !

Holly,

You talking through your backside is not off topic, it is a matter of fact!

I do have broadband connection at home, I also have full subscription to Sky TV and my lad as an XBOX 360 Elite and the combination of the three provides me with all of Sky Sports coverage of the Premiership and La Liga, Sky TV also provides me with ESPN which provides me with Eridivisie, Bundesliga and Serie A. The XBOX allows me to wirelessly stream, via the internet, any games not shown on satellite directly from my study to my TV in the lounge. Funnily enough I only pay £15 a month for my broadband which provides me with my internet connection and phone, my satellite subscription doesn’t cost me a penny. I strongly advise you to shop around for a better deal holly but in saying that you are probably not bothered about paying way over the odds to get what you want, being a Madrid fan and all!

As I’ve told you time and time again, only the boring get bored holly. And it’s funny how you pity a guy that your club would just love to have in their own dugout!

You are that blinded by hate that you cannot ever bring yourself to say anything positive about United or Premiership football in general, that I pity!

9 November 2009 15:49

Newty , maybe you have to take care where your money goes if you alimony or child support for your ex , but that's not my case I really don't stress myself to save some extra euros from a subscription , otherwise I just go and ask for a parallel card from my family , maybe I will pay only 10 e for that , but I am not the kind who can go and ask anyone for anything .

I work I pay half for our appartment and other bills , the rest is for hobbies and travelling .

Well newty , if you think ManU are still as good as when Ronaldo and Tevez were there then you are lying to yourself , I am afraid you are going to lose Rooney also as our money didn't help the Glazers in their debts , your games risk to be more boring .

newtonheath1878

9 November 2009 17:50

Holly it’s not a case of having to save money it is a case of not wanting to throw it away, nothing stressful about that, in fact it's very basic life management young man. I have more than enough wealth to pay a satellite subscription fifty times over in a month but I choose not to because I don’t need to, it’s called “value for money. Just because you may have it now holly doesn’t guarantee you always will, my you have a lot to learn!

I don’t pay child maintenance because my lads mother doesn’t expect me to, he has everything he needs at both of his homes and his mother is a successful businesswomen who really doesn’t need or want my handouts.

Holly any team would miss Ronaldo in the interim, Real are a prime example of this but Tevez…No! United play a different game now and are still adjusting to that loss, Ronaldo had always papered over a crack in our midfield after Keane left in that we became a counter attacking team and basically cut the midfield out of the equation but now have one or two players are starting to step up to the plate and once Hargreaves is back later in the winter we will be a formidable force again.

With regards to the Rooney situation, are you still believing everything you read in the papers again holly? Tut, tut, I’d thought I’d taught you all about the puppet show along time ago. As I assured you about the Ronaldo deal a year before the deal went through I will tell you this now about Rooney. Rooney will overtake Sir Ryan Giggs’ United appearance record!

9 November 2009 19:09

Newty , I am sure you know that the decision to sell a player is not to the player himself . I doubt about Barcelona wanting to pay that much money because they don't have it simply , but if the Glazers will read this somewhere they will be the first ones to ring Laporta and tell him they are ready to sell , trust me . The Glazers are not the kind who can say NO for €100 m , but it just seem more like impossible this sum for Barcelona , and especially for Rooney . He is not worth more than €40m and he doesn't fit in the Spanish game .

Mark, where have you been?

Wait tomorrow morning when he is at work .

10 November 2009 10:43

holly, I knew, and told you, what was going on at your club months and months before you had inkling on the Ronaldo deal. I will tell you again as I’ve told you many times before stop believing everything you read in the papers. Rooney is going nowhere, even if the money was on the table he still would be going nowhere. Ronaldo went because he wanted to go and United made sure they got the maximum amount of money to compensate the loss. It doesn’t surprise me that you haven’t, but I thought you may have learnt a lesson or two over the past 12 months or so, obviously not!

I do agree with you that Rooney wouldn’t fit into the Spanish game though, he would end up murdering all the pansies rolling about on the floor clutching their shins in agony when they have been shoulder charged!

Oh and by the way holly, some of us have a life away from soccerway; I choose not to go on soccerway or the internet in general during the evening and weekends because I value my family time!

Fred, I’ve been around, I was in Ireland for a short week a couple of weeks ago for a relatives wedding but other than that I’ve just been getting on with my job. I’ve undertaken quite a few new responsibilities at work so I’ve acquired a little bit more of a workload. I’m enjoying it though as I’m now dealing with a lot of my companies clients in Eire so I’m speaking with the old clansmen on a day to day basis, good fun!

I’ve still got your gift at home but I’m waiting on somebody signing it but the gentleman that I am pursuing is proving to be quite allusive. Hope you and the family are well?

hollyice

10 November 2009 11:20

No Newty , Rooney doesn't fit because he is a 2nd rate player and can shine between the 2nd rate players such as Bent , Bellamy , Saha , Keane etc ..but not between Kaka , Ronaldo , Higuain , Benzema , Iniesta , Ibra , Messi , David Villa , Fabiano ...etc . Greatest players make other ones 2nd rate ones .

newtonheath1878

10 November 2009 12:21

All I will say holly is that you are very much in the minority with your opinion of Rooney, but I and others on here know your ability to give an honest opinion on anything involving an English or United player is blighted by your hatred, what a shame!

By the way, Benzema is unproven, and Ibra is a big time Charlie who disappears in big games!

hollyice

10 November 2009 12:45

Benzema unproven ? Remember he is not yet 22 and I will remind you your words soon .

Well , we all value family time , I have a girlfriend who likes too much football too , so if that happen to come 3 , 4 good games from Liga or SerieA from Tv (some Epl games also) you can imagine how long we spend together , in our life football , football and football . I do have my pc open all the time so , few seconds to post a message here isn't a big deal . She is a Madridista also so , you can see how lucky I am , I am not stressed like you ;) .

You said you do watch a lot of football , if I didn't misunderstand it's highlights then , eh ?Or is it just a lie this family time value ?

newtonheath1878

10 November 2009 14:24

Holly there are four people in my household, all of them United Fans, we have football on all the time, we do watch (and go to) the full match unlike some on here who read the newspapers and stories on the internet and form their opinion on some tabloid news report. You really do think that were part timers her in Manchester don’t you! I know you wouldn’t set foot in Manchester unless you had to, and believe me we’re more than happy with that, but if you were to spend a week or two here you would be blown away at the intensity of the fascination with football not just in Manchester but the North West in general. Football in this part of the world is the cornerstone of society it is absolutely ingrained into our makeup, football is family life but responding to your very lame, ill-informed comments on here isn’t my idea of a pleasant evening. In a forty mile radius of Manchester nearly half of the top flight teams in England are based within that circle, we live, breath, eat and sleep football. So please, you will have to do a lot better with your posts if you are going to suggest that I don’t know what I’m talking about. As I’ve told you before, I’ve forgotten more about football than you know

“Benzema unproven ? Remember he is not yet 22 and I will remind you your words soon”

Why not remind me that he is not unproven now? Why soon? Will you remind me of my words when he has proven his potential? If so does that not mean he is unproven awaiting to prove himself. Do you not realize in your very quote you have proven he is unproven?

Different week same story holly! Go away young man, you’re far too easy!

hollyice

10 November 2009 15:33

Newty , I start to get tired of your garbage again , like always . It was your club which announced they tried to sign Benzema but they couldn't because of the high transfer fee which Lyon asked for , it was €35m , the truth is that they know he didn't want to go to that average club , he dreamt about Madrid and he signed for Madrid , it was clear , now you can call him unproven even he scored in his first game with Madrid and rated many times man of the match in front of Kaká and Ronaldo . If jealousy kills you could have been dead longtime ago .

You can describe Manchester as much as you can , but they will be behind Madrid in all domains especially in football . Let beside other stuff .

A singer , friend of us invited us for a beer , so catch you later .

newtonheath1878

10 November 2009 17:16

What do you mean garbage, I thought it only took you a couple of minutes to post responses on your ever open PC, no stress, you said. No peace you said you would give me, remember. Too easy holly, debating with you is like taking candy off a baby!

Do you know why you always give up holly? Because I always tear pieces out of your comments, do I do it on purpose? Yes! Why, because your comments are full of inconsistencies yet you try and portray yourself as “in the know”! There is no jealousy involved, can you show me anywhere where I stated that I wanted Benzema to come to United…well…didn’t think so. I think Benzema is a good player but I don’t think he is a great player, yet! To even mention his name in the same sentence as some of the others you have mentioned is a disgrace! Why, because he is UNPROVEN! He is a good French centre forward that had a good season in Ligue 1 a couple of years ago, and your not even man enough to admit that, in my opinion he should have stayed in France and learnt more before he moved on, the poor lad doesn’t stand a chance at your place now!

hollyice

11 November 2009 15:11

Yep newty , ManU tried to sign Benzema but they couldn't , it's not you who said but your club .

newtonheath1878

11 November 2009 17:19

Still avoiding your failings I see holly, never mind, you change the subject if you wish as it still doesn’t detract from the fact that your very own quote contradicted itself!

It’s all there in black and white further up the page! Too easy!!!!

Candy…….baby………….take………too easy!

hollyice

11 November 2009 17:42

Newty , I am not escaping or avoiding anything like you do always . Read my posts , subjects stick to each other so if you bring Benzema's case up of course I will tell you that your club tried to sign him and couldn't get him that's why youe are telling your garbage here .

In my posts I critisize average clubs like ManU or Inter , their anti-football , their signings , their all foreigner stuff (and staff) , what I get is personal judgements back when you or some loser here does not find anything to defend your/his filthy club .

Take it easy man like me and continue talking about football and players .

newtonheath1878

11 November 2009 18:05

Holly, regardless of who Benzema signed for he still an unproven player, you tried to detract from your quote by saying I was Jealous that he signed for Madrid, even if he was playing for United he still would be in my opinion a good, not great player.

As per usual you take it off on a tangent; you’re just not man enough to say you were wrong!

Candy…….baby……take……too easy!

Night, night little boy!

hollyice

11 November 2009 18:27

Newty , I really appreciate the solution you chose to be with a woman from a culture you can dominate easily because no any western woman can stand your attitude and especially jealousy. I have been since 97 with the same girl and I am proud about it , not like you with your past.

You can just recognize that ManU can't compete with Madrid to sign players and no any other English club or even Barcelona can't compete with us in that matter , any Madridista knows that only Milan can compete with us to sign Africans , South Americans or English players also .They are famous for being a great club just like we but clubs such as yours are too far behind .

newtonheath1878

12 November 2009 10:15

You carry on holly because inadvertently all you are doing is proving me right time after time!

Take time to read your complaint in your second to last post then read your last post and if you are as intelligent as you try and portray you will see the obvious contradictions and inconstancies in your arguments. Do I really need to spell it out to you time and time again?

And just one reply to your last comments (why I lower myself to your level is beyond me at times!). Love chooses you, one doesn’t choose love!

PS, have you been living in sin you naughty little boy?
