Liverpool still hopeful about Champions League

Anurada Bhat - 5 November 2009 12:39

Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez hopes the team will do miracles to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League.

Liverpool's fate in Group E is out of their own hands after they surrendered a crucial win against Lyon with Lisandro Lopez's last-gasp goal earning the French side a 1-1 draw at Stade Gerland. Coach Rafael Benitez hopes for a miracle to qualify the Reds for the last 16 of the Champions League.

The Premier League club now needs Lyon to get a result against Fiorentina in Italy, and ensure they beat Debrecen and the Serie A side themselves at Anfield in their final Group E match.

Benitez told the press, “Clearly it's difficult now but it's not impossible.”

“We have to win our next game against Debrecen and see what happens in the other match - then approach the last depending on the result.”

“But we have to keep going, that's all we can do. We have done miracles before... maybe we can do it again.”

“Obviously we have to be really disappointed because this was a great opportunity - we were there. Again it's a late goal against Lyon and it makes a massive difference.”

Liverpool’s goalkeeper, Reina felt his side were unlucky not to win at Lyon feeling it was one of their best performances of the season.

"I am really disappointed because I think we played one of our best games of the season so far, but we did not get the result we wanted," said Reina.

"I thought we'd done enough to win. We didn't deserve to lose at home when we played Lyon, and we didn't deserve to draw here, but that's the way it is and we have to face it.

"We will keep fighting and the least we can do is win our two remaining games, “admits the 27 year old.

The Red’s attacker Kuyt admitted the draw felt like a defeat and he has called on his team-mates to stick together as they look to end their current slump in form.

"It feels like a defeat," admitted Kuyt. "I think we deserved to win, but we conceded in the last minute and everyone is really disappointed.

We showed character and that's what we have to do at this stage. We deserved more, but all we can do is work hard and get ready for the next game.”

Madrid is behind this year's Liverpool disaster , Xabi did a great job there and no one can deny it . Barcelona and Liverpool are near to join the UEFA Europa League , just wishing now that Rubin will stun Dynamo and Barcelona - Inter draw . Benitez has to be very good in mathematics if he has still hope , but the reality is that he was sleeping when Lyon and Fiorentina were collecting points , it's not now that they will give up after they are almost qualified .

Fact is Pool has been milked dry by American playboys. We know and leave with the obvious fact that Valencia has problem and players and coaches understand and their utmost to be relevant. In the case of liverpool it was a complete ripoff and player, coaches and fan are disatisfied - hence the lacklustre display. You can have money and have players like Alonso among others leave.

Soon Tores, Caragher and Gerald will have to leave as well.
