PSV Eindhoven finally returned to winning ways on Saturday, beating Vitesse of Arnhem 2-0 in a match that, other than the goals, showed little entertainment.
The defending champions took the lead through Ibrahim Affelay on 24 minutes and Ola Toivonen made it 2-0 with 20 minutes to go. By scoring the second goal, the Finnish midfielder rewarded caretaker manager Lodeweges for expressing his trust in the Scandinavian earlier this week.
PSV remain in fifth place, but the gap with sixth-placed FC Groningen now stands at six points. Groningen face a tough away match at second-placed Twente on Sunday.
Leaders AZ meet with Feyenoord, and a win would lead them another step closer to the championship.
