Roberto Carlos mulling Real return

AFP - 17 March 2009 12:50

Brazil international Roberto Carlos, seen here in 2006, says he is ready to move back to Real Madrid from Turkish side Fenerbahce if the Spanish club´s former president Florentino Perez returns.

MADRID (AFP) - Brazilian defender Roberto Carlos says he is ready to move back to Real Madrid from Turkish side Fenerbahce if the Spanish club's former president Florentino Perez returns.

"If Florentino comes and says 'Roberto, come back', I will have to think about it and talk about it. I have never said I won't come back," he told Spain's Cope radio late Monday.

The 35-year-old played for Real from 1996 until 2007, when he joined Turkish giants Fenerbahce on a two-year deal.

Real "is the team of my life and I would be lying if I said that I don't want to go back, but we must wait and see the people who come back with Florentino and what their plans are," he said.

Florentino Perez was president of Real from 2000 to 2006, during which time he brought in several big name players such as Luis Figo, David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo.

Real is to elect a new president this summer.

we do not need another old defender. we love you for what you did back in your prime, but we need to look to the future.

Generalizations don't apply to everyone, he might be as effective a lot of other guys. Defenders can play to an older age and 40 is the new 30. And besides, the guy's a Brazilian.

Ha! Is this Raul dream? The building of a team where he is the youngest? This is a joke.

Well , he is much better than Cannavaro who is 36 now . If I have to decide , I will give them the best presents what a man who goes to retirement cannot get , to thank them for what they did . But now we need younger generation .

Young and unproven versus Reliable and Experienced.

Too many of these kids experience is in playing video games not footy games.

Likewise, though I'm not backing Italy as my first team to win the World Cup, Cannavaro could well lead them to glory again.

onelove, I agree with you. Roberto was an asset for us simply due to his presence on the pitch, but honestly, as a defender, he fell short. He was never a great defensive player (only slightly better than Drenthe is now), and wasted SO many good free kick opportunities. He did use the pitch well however, and his pace disrupted almost every side we played. If he still has that pace, he could be an asset again. As far as being better than Cannavaro... hollyice, they play completely different positions. As much as I would love to see a bigger, quicker defender (Mexes?) partner with Pepe in the middle, Fabio is still serviceable. I'm not sure why Cannavaro was bought in the first place, but he's all we have, you know? Maybe we'll scoop someone up during the summer window.

Forzarealus, Mexes is one player I dont wish never to sign with Los Blancos , they told me a lot about this player and one time I decided to watch him playing I was very disappointed , that was France vs Austria in Vienna where Austria crushed France just because 1 player failed and gave them golden gift and showed he is not that good people talk about him . Find somewhere the highlights video and watch at him . Not good for us.

hollyice, it's hardly fair to judge a player on 1 performance. What if we all judged Vidic by his performance against Liverpool?

Saying that, I don't think he's good enough for Real. He's solid enough in most games but he's a bit of a hothead. Real have massive problems in defence and it will take a much better player than Mexes to start fixing them. It's clear to me that the only defender who should be a regular is Ramos, the rest of them are liabilities.

They'll coax Zidane out of retirement, El Fenomeno could easily be headed back from what he's paid in Brazil, Beckham, Cannavaro, Raul and Carols, all true Real fans are waiting in eager anticipation in what would be a dynamite team.
