Slovakia are a big step closer to next year's World Cup in South Africa, following a convincing 7-0 win over San Marino.

The Slovakians only needed three minutes for Marek Cech to open the score, and Peter Pekarik made it 2-0 shortly after. Cech, Miroslav Stoch and Jan Kozak went on to give the hosts a 5-0 lead at half time.

Two more goals were added after the break, with Martin Jakubko and Lubo Hanzel adding to San Marino's misery.

Slovakia lead Group 3 of the European World Cup qualifiers with 15 points from six games. Northern Ireland are second with 13 points but played a game more. Poland, Czech Republic and Slovenia appear to be in a fight for third place.

Obviously, Slovakia is very good and stands to be one of the first to qualify if not the first.

Slovakians have had a lot of time on their hands since the iron curtain was sold to grandma babalovitchz and the Brushniness started taking over their every thought and control mechanisms. After all, what's the point if there is NO more BRUSHNY-BAH??

Soccer started out as a hobby and after sometime they started watching England tv and eating fish & chips and talking all funny & crazy & before u know it, the were kicking soccer balls into nets and eating that wild goat & drinking Zerblinky.

It's good to have all of this fun-time so remember 1 thing, WHATEVER HAPPENS YOU DECIDE!

This is the kind of trash that's fed to us on SoccerWay.

Slovakia, a nation that has never achieved anything in the world of football, is glorified on this website, after a "convincing" victory against San Marino.

Actually, everybody wins 7-0 against San Marino, which is a very small nation (similar in size to Lichtenschtein) that fields a squad of amateurs in its national team, i.e. the town's butcher, baker, the bus driver, etc.

So, what's great about Slovakia's achievement ??

Giorgio, I couldn't agree with you more. For those who don’t know, San Marino is a Principality located in north central Italy. It’s one of the oldest republics in Europe with a population of scarcely 30.000 people. It’s a miracle that they have a team competing in the European and World Cup qualification rounds. With much respect to the Checks, they may have come closer to qualifying but they have not proved anything by beating San Marino.

Below, I don't even call it a "big" story, I call it a "news" story.

It's a news story because: Northern Ireland had nosed up into first place despite playing more games.

It's a news story because Slovakia which became a new country in the 1990s from Czechoslovakia has never gone to the World Cup.

Giorgio and Tontodonati's England don't even make these tournaments every time. They should not be talking down Slovakia. They must have been the same people who were talking down Slovakia when Slovakia lost to England in a FRIENDLY a few months ago 4-0. Slovakia was talked down but we all know, FRIENDLIES in some cases aren't taken that seriously, especially if played on a Saturday and the next Wednesday, a team has to play an important group game. http://www.soccerway.com/teams/slovakia/slovakia/

Holland is clearly, the first country to qualify out of Europe.

These are all newsworthy stories.

"This is the kind of trash that's fed to us on SoccerWay."

Slovakia was roundly called crummy here by England bashers when they lost their friendly, abusive dummies who will be left nameless. Now, if they were wrongly trashed here, I don't see what is wrong when the truth shows they have been doing very well in their qualifiers.

International coverage: Slovakia is virtually into the next world cup and only Holland has qualified. So, they may even be closer than some of the traditional powers are. Nothing wrong with reporting it. The article is about Slovakia being close to the World Cup, not about San Marino.

I don't see any "Checks" having played. Where is that?? The Slovaks played, they became their own nation in the 1990s like Croatia.

Soccerway should have said "Thrashed" not "Trashed." People might take the latter with offense.

Still, don't forget, Slovakia was roundly degraded using unkind terms by soccer-ignorant people here on losing nothing more than a Friendly to England, one Slovakia would probably not have cared much about having a big game the following Wednesday that would be a very decisive game against the Czech Republic. Besides, that is the country they separated from. So that was a big game, a bit like Italy/France for them.

Escape_to_Victory,

Actually I'm Italian and I support Italy, not England.

And I agree that it's very important for Slovakia, a nation that came into being in the 1990's, to qualify for the 2010 WC.

And at the same time, winning 7-0 against San Marino is not the kind of result to write home about, be it by Slovakia or any other national team.
