Capello relieved as England edge closer to SAfrica

AFP - 7 June 2009 03:05

England´s Areth Barry (Top) jumps over Kazakhstan´s Yevgeny Averchenko during their 2010 FIFA World Cup European group 6 qualifier football match, in Almaty. England won 4-0.

ALMATY (AFP) - Fabio Capello has paid tribute to his England players for the way in which they put a stuttering start behind them to maintain their 100 percent World Cup qualifying record with a 4-0 win over Kazakhstan.

Capello was alarmed by the extent to which the Kazakhs had unsettled his side in the opening half hour, with striker Sergey Ostapenko wasting one clear chance and then having a second effort chalked off for offside.

But the Italian declared himself satisfied with the way they killed off the match with goals from Gareth Barry and Emile Heskey in the closing minutes of the first half before Wayne Rooney's eighth in his last six internationals and a late Frank Lampard penalty gave the score a flattering edge.

A win over tiny Andorra at Wembley on Wednesday would leave England with seven wins out of seven in group six and, from that position, it would be a major surprise if they did not go on to top the group and book their place in South Africa.

"I was disappointed with the position on the pitch of some players," Capello said of the tricky first half hour. "But in the end I'm very happy. We knew they would press us at the start and we were prepared for it.

"Against a team not at your level it is always important to score the first goal and then their level goes down.

"They scored a goal that was offside but there were no other problems for our goalkeeper and that was very important."

Capello confirmed that his half-time substitution of Theo Walcott, who made way for Shaun Wright-Phillips, had been a tactical rather than an injury-forced change.

Capello will have to make some changes on Wednesday as Gareth Barry, who picked up a booking here, will be suspended, which could mean David Beckham winning his 112th cap in a rare starting role.

"A win against Andorra would be another big step forward," Capello said. "If we win we will have 21 points and it's a lot."

England skipper John Terry admitted Kazakhstan had made life difficult initially.

"It is a massive win on the way to where we want to be," the Chelsea centreback said. "It really is a big win.

"We it was going to be difficult for 40-50 minutes and then they would tire.

"Six wins out of six is fantastic but we're not there yet, we're in a good position, but taking nothing for granted. We've got Andorra at home, and they can sit back and make it difficult. But if we can get the seventh win out of seven, it will be fantastic."

Capello had warned his players that he would not accept the draining effects of an eight-hour flight and a five-hour time difference as excuses for anything less than a totally focused performance.

It was not an instruction that Glen Johnson appeared to have absorbed as his dithering allowed Zhambyl Kukeyev to tee up Ostapenko with a low cross that the Kazakh's star striker really should have buried after barely 30 seconds.

England had another let off in the 17th minute, when Ostapenko headed in Kukeyev's freekick at the back post. A linesman's flag for offside spared Robert Green scrutiny of how he ended up stranded as the Kazakh striker, who was to limp off ten minutes later, enjoyed a free header.

The visitors finally seized control with two goals in the space of five minutes at the end of the opening period.

The first came from a corner on the left that was played short by Frank Lampard to Steven Gerrard. The Liverpool midfielder turned the fullback all too easily and sent over a left-foot cross that Barry, unchallenged beyond the back post, was able to steer back across Mokin into the net.

Gerrard was also the instigator of the second with his cross taking a deflection over the head of Mokin, who, scrambling backwards, was only able to palm the ball towards Heskey, who hooked in a first-time finish from close range.

Shaun Wright-Phillips was hardly any more influential than Walcott but the Manchester City winger did start the move that led to England's third goal by sending Johnson on a 73rd-minute overlap down the right side of the box.

The defender's cross was deflected goalwards off Rooney's knee, forcing Mokin into a superb save, but the goalkeeper's impressive effort proved in vain. Rooney was first to the loose ball and flipped his body acrobatically to hook it back into the net.

Five minutes later, Lampard added the fourth with an emphatic spot-kick after Heskey was fouled while straining to reach the rebound from Ashley Cole's well-saved effort.

England didn't play great last night.

They'll have to do a lot better if they have aspirations to be World Cup winners !!!

They did what they had to do to win.

Come next year they will be in there for the kill.

Pato01

they will scale the qualification hurdle easily - thanks to Croatia_ and then helluva HYPE from BBC and unheard of formation or strategy that can win a universal tourney and finally in SA the big FLOP. It is Germany repeated this time under MR CAPELLO. nothing really unusual, been like that since 1966!

Wait and see. English football is getting better. I know we have a lot of foreign players here but we do have some strong skilful English players too. It could be our time. Watch this space.

Let's start with the English football team for a nice coming back to soccerway .

I was just wondering why they dont use injured guys like Ferdinand against Andorra . He will fit well against such teams . I think England will deserve to go to the world cup just like a makeshift team , wish them good luck there to face not teams like Spain , Brazil , Italy , Argentina ...etc , and why not win the final against some Gabon and say they deserved the WC after the big teams will eliminate each other .

I have to take it easy today after I caught cold flu up north there in a sad city , Manchester, and go out for a walk to warm myself . Few hours outside to watch a ladies rugby game between England and Argentina enough to come sick . If the English will play the same way against the Ozzies they will be stunned again 76-0 like 10 years ago .

Oh more news this morning for people of Manchester , Nick Griffin got many people behind him to rally the BNP , some will say it's a sad day .

phughes699

Six matches and not a point dropped, with Andorra at home to come, put England among the most impressive national teams of the World Cup qualifying season about to end, along with the likes of Spain, Holland, Brazil — much pressure on Dunga, the coach, was relieved by a 4-0 triumph in Uruguay at the weekend — and Chile, whose win in Paraguay gives them a serious chance of going to South Africa.

Capello’s men will be there and I see no reason to alter the view that they can be world champions 13 months from now, even though the Italian spent half of Saturday night rolling his eyes, throwing back his head and spreading his arms in frustration.

There is a lot for this team still to learn, not least patience in possession, but 13 months is a long time in which to close the gap on Spain, the most patient and — Capello must hope his players come to understand how little this owes to coincidence — best national team in Europe.

HOLLYICE THE BNP VOTE IS A VOTE AGAINST IMMIGRATION ...... VERY SAD THAT THEY ARE COMING UP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hollyice

8 June 2009 11:43

Chelsea , with people like newty and co. it's normal that they come up , when people dont integrate the society where they live it's not a surprise , but I believe it's more a protest vote .

phughes699

8 June 2009 12:05

Basically as Hollyice said, it is a protest vote because people in Britain are becoming increasingly fed up with foreigners milking the system.

They arrive in Britain from all over the world. I am not against foreigners living there but I do hate "the milkers" and so have some sympathy in some respect for the BNP.

Just wondering what happened to newty , somoene when leaving the stadium told me that he had a fight with some guy , did newty mixed him with hollyice?

I just saw that during the week end newty posted this to me :

Hi guys, its nice to see you chatting peacefully without repulsive slangs to each other. I hope this persists. One thing is obvious- you both (Phughes abd Hollyice) are the most famous here, with good informative spirits.

Back to soccer, i think the English national team has been a bit consistent in result compared to other recent years. With this spirit, we hope they can bring a result from the WC is SA in 13 months.

newtonheath1878

8 June 2009 14:10

Holly you had every opportunity to back up your threat to me, I proposed I quiet place for you to carry out your threat but you bottled it.

So carry on with your excuses and try and mask it over as much as you want but you and I both know that I called your bluff and, in short, you didn’t have the balls to pitch up.

So stop wasting people’s time with threats that you are not brave enough to carry out.

As I have always said, a boy in a mans world, don’t expect any further responses to your talk holly, I don’t deal with cowards!

newtonheath1878

8 June 2009 14:31

Paul,

England has a hell of a lot of work to do if they are to stand a chance of success in South Africa. I thought they were very poor in the first half, they looked stagnant and lacked ideas, they were better in the second half but Kazakhstan traditionally fade off in the second halves of games anyway. With due respect to the other nations in this group it is still a very easy group and isn’t a test for a team who have moved up to sixth place in the FIFA rankings. If England do qualify, which is looking highly likely, then they need to arrange some decent friendly matches against sterner opposition otherwise they will struggle to get beyond the quarters next year. They are on the right track Paul but there is still a long way to go!

hollyice

8 June 2009 15:05

Newty , I post here your comment ! the biggest threat in soccerway history :

<<< I’m sorry I wasn’t around, but I thought I’d conform to your stereotypical views of a Muslim, so I took a working holiday and me and my brothers discussed the next MADRID MASSACRE!>>>>

Is there more bad threat than this newty ?? I wished BNP won the elections that they kick your ass out of England .

Bostanci

8 June 2009 15:40

Finja,

You stated that “…some guys are really nasty in here”. I have clearly warned you that if you attacked me in anyway, I would come back. It seems to me that you did not really get the message.

I might be nasty, but what about you? A coward with a social and ethical disorder who only wants to be famous, and now an arse licker (as you stated “…. you both (Phughes abd Hollyice) are the most famous here, with good informative spirits”).

I would like to write more, but to be honest I really “scared” by your guardian angels, Giorgio who doesn’t believe the existence of the racism and it is just a hoax created by some left-wingers to proclaim today’s morality, and Allane, who could easily justify the Armenian genocide as he hates a single Armenian.

How old are you, man? Seriously are you 14 or 15? You don’t know anything about football. On the other hand, if you are really 14 or 15, go back to your college, forget about football, do your best to educate yourself. Believe me, you absolutely have no future in football with that IQ level.

Hollyice,

You stated, “I wished BNP won the elections that they kick your ass out of England”. That is very naïve and appaling. I guess, BNP is no different to the Nazis. You shouldn’t wish neo-nazis come to power and kick someone’s arse out of somewhere. I appriciated that you were not happy and that you were threatened with death or whatever, but it does not give you right to act the same way. Come back to your common sense.

Phughes,

How on earth can you have sympathy with the BNP as they are against foreigners living in England and you are living in a different contry to your country of origin? You sometimes act like Giorgio the bruno, pompous English old fart.

hollyice

8 June 2009 16:18

Bostanci , I said that because I know newty is the kind you give to him your finger and he wants the whole hand . Better not give to him anything.

He moved with his caravan (older ones) to England , got good life , school , work , house ...etc , and he is not happy still with that , he wants to massacre the world with his brothers .

phughes699

8 June 2009 16:38

Bostanci.

If you read what I said. I said I am against foreigners that milk the system. For example, come to live in Britain, claim all the social security and rent handouts and work on the side illegally. That does not mean I support BNP, but I can see sometimes where they are coming from. I hope that explains my position.

phughes699

8 June 2009 16:43

Oh, and less of the pompous you cheeky bastard.

phughes699

8 June 2009 16:52

Mark.

Regarding the England team, I agree and understand what you are saying, but I do have a firm belief in Professor Capello. They have plenty of time yet but as you say, some decent opposition would give us a better guideline.

newtonheath1878

8 June 2009 17:24

Bostanci,

When I stated what I stated a very long time ago, it was not stated with any malice, if certain dumb bigots on here could not see that it was a sarcastical response to their constant stereotypical, derogative jibes towards Islam, then unfortunately it is not my problem that they cannot see the woods for the trees.

You know as well as I do that bigots and cowards will scream “fire” when it suits them and them only!

newtonheath1878

8 June 2009 17:33

Paul, I think Capello is a great manager but I still think it will be a few years yet before England hit their peak; the mentality of young English players is slowly but surely starting to change as are the mindset of the people that coach the youth. They are becoming a lot more technically minded through watching and playing with foreigners in the EPL and that is starting to rub off on the training pitch.. I just feel that this transition will take a while yet so it may be the next generation of 13, 14 & 15 year olds who break through is when you will see the real impact on the national game. England has some class players but a majority rely on fitness and guile alone but I expect a change in that ability in next 4 or 5 years.

I’m not a huge advocate of a non national managing a national team but I do feel England will benefit from the Capello era even though there maybe not much to show for it in silverware!

Pato01

8 June 2009 18:15

if it is the local league in question am sure Capello like Fergy knows the right buttons to press to win it. in a tournament of this magnitude, it is just obvious England as a team lacks the human resources in the current squard and the technical know how in Capello to make any impact.

I think England really needs to talk Arsene Wenger into helping her scout out and build a youth team. He has the talent and has been doing that in Arsenal. With Mr. CAPELLO, we are just talking about the money, opportunity to watch choice matches and pretend to be working by fielding what the press want him to field.

Escape_to_Victory

8 June 2009 18:40

England are a good team undoubtedly, Spain are better. Holland are better but they have problems in the big tournaments.

Italy and Brazil continue to be contenders. Maybe Germany too.

I'm sorry if I'm not sure if Argentina can do it with their coach though they have much talent.

There are bound to be some surprises that might play well at the World Cup. Nigeria has finally started playing good ball and Ghana is playing well. Japan might come of age, it will be open to others besides the traditional powers.

Bostanci

8 June 2009 19:00

Phughes,

You are against the foreigners that milk the system? You ARE a foreigner milking the Thai system, coming from abroad, buying and living in the houses that most of the Thai people cannot afford to buy. This is a kind of milking, isn’t it? Exploiting the poorer countries is a form of milking. I have several English neighbors with working class background from England. They bought houses and land relatively cheaper then their country of origin. But this does not justify racism, nationality, prejudice, or any kind of hatred.

Newty,

I am aware of discrimination and intolerance toward Muslim individuals and communities, especially most recent years. Islamophobic sentiment is derived from ignorance and bigotry and it is a variety of acts of racism. However, justifying armed/bombed attacks on civilians (like in Madrid, or New York etc) are a kind of cowardice, and totally unacceptable. No faith or religion could justify vice verse. You stated you have no malice, but it is still wrong “sarcastical response to them because of their constant stereotypical, derogative jibes towards Islam!”

Hollyice,

I live among the Muslims openly with my none-Muslim identity. I have never been discriminated against or abused by them (as a matter of fact I have been racially abused someone first time at this web site, by a racist called Allane. Then again, I just ignored it, as he has no personality whatsoever). please, don't abuse anyone because of their religious beliefs/faith and race.

PHughes again,

You SHUT UP, old fart.

Bostanci, I am becoming a little tired of you calling me names. Now if you want a proprer conversation with me, will you please behave yourself.

Regarding milking the system in Thailand. I do not take any money out of the Thai system. In fact I put money into it.

I am independant as regards money. I have my own from England. That isn't milking......sorry.

9 June 2009 12:27

Escape to victory,

First of all, I have nothing to do with you. I am really disappointed that you called me an “impostor”. You can call me dumb, arrogant, aggressive, goldilocks etc, but an impostor, -come on man-, I do not need to be. Whatever I am, I am. If you still really want to know me, unlike many others in this web site, I would reveal exactly who I am to you.

Phughes,

I have also nothing to do with you “anymore”. I am just 10 years younger then you. So, I am an old man, too. I SINCERELY apologise calling you names, and being “cheeky bastard” towards you. However, if you remember you are the first one calling me and many others with derogatory names. Very short time ago, I said that I will never post anything here, unless someone put something against me (like finja – he did so, and I have come back). I think finja got the message, and won’t post anything against me. So, this is probably the last post from me (with the hope that someone in future would not put anything against me). Just one last thing, your team, England, wouldn’t win the world cup, due to lack of a very good goalkeeper and top class striker. But still you can dream on.

newtonheath1878

I would never justify the actions of a terrorist, in fact the people that carry out such acts are pathetic excuses for human beings, I was merely conforming to what they wanted expected me to be. You see they ridicule my faith as filthy and violent then they start crying when I act in such a way. My comments were a way of showing how small minded they were being not a justification of the violence that certain individuals carry out.

You seem a smart guy Bostanci, if so you should know through experience that there is only a certain type of language that these type of people understand!

Bostanci

9 June 2009 14:09

I apologise from you, too. There is a misunderstanding. I did NOT mean that YOU justify the actions of the terrorists. I am also aware islamofobia especially in the western coutries, but again, life goes on. Last thing, I still believe that you will be very good friend with Hollyice. Believe me, football makes enemies best friends.

also note that i will not be visiting this web site anymore. so wish you all entertainment conversations and fights.

I accept your apologies and I hope there is no hard feelings. You should not stop posting on here. If you have something to say, say it. Never mind other people.

That's what a forum like this is all about. Unfortunately some of us get carried away and start giving personal insults to people. when you feel like you come and have your say....don't forget. Nobody is the owner here.
