Real Madrid coach mulls over final squad

26 July 2009 00:05

Real Madrid´s Chilean coach Manuel Pellegrini arrives to their first training session on July 15, 2009 at the Carton House Hotel, in Maynooth, 22 km from Dublin, Ireland. Real Madrid still has still not determined what its final squad and its starting 11 will be for the upcoming season, new coach Pellegrini said Saturday.

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid still has still not determined what its final squad and its starting 11 will be for the upcoming season, new coach Manuel Pellegrini said Saturday.

The Spanish giants spent over 200 million euros on new players in the pre-season, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Kaka, and earlier this month Pellegrini said he hoped to have the final squad ironed out by July 27 when all of the club's internationals returned from holidays.

"I said that, but I added that it was important not to make mistakes, that we should make the right decisions. We'll wait longer if we must," the Chilean coach told a news conference ahead of Real's friendly at home Sunday against Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad.

"I wish the squad was tighter by now, but it isn't a big deal. We train normally and there is a good atmosphere in the team. Every player tries to do his best. Our duty is to do the same job with every footballer we have and we'll keep on doing so," he added.

Real's spending spree has left it with an overcrowded dressing room as the club has been less successful at offloading players than it has been at recruiting new ones.

Pellegrini repeated Real's desire to sell its Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who has been linked with a move to Stuttgart and more recently with Tottenham.

"I've spoken to every player and Huntelaar knows what I want. We have many strikers on the team and they can't all stay. Everybody knows how good he is. We have an excess of strikers right now and he knows there is no place for him," he said.

Argentine defender Gabriel Heinze is also on the "for sale" list, but the size of his wage packet is proving an obstacle. Marseille were interested in the player but cooled off when confronted with a 4.2 million euro price tag.

Pellegrini included Ronaldo and Benzema in his 20-man squad for the match on Sunday against Al-Ittihad.

If Ronaldo is sent on the pitch it will be the first time that he plays for Real at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium since his record-setting transfer from Manchester United last month.

"We haven't started to try out a defined starting 11 yet. Ronaldo will sometimes play down the wing and will sometimes be positioned as a striker. He is comfortable anywhere in attack," said Pellegrini.

"These are friendly games in which we aren't looking for a starting lineup," he added.

Ronaldo made his debut for Real last week as they eked out a 1-0 victory over Shamrock Rovers in Ireland. Benzema scored the winner.

The 24-year-old Portuguese winger was taken off at half-time having failed to sparkle against some muscular defending.

I understand those players who dont want to leave the club and somehow they are right but the problem we need money also to keep it turning . I remember when they signed Benzema they were talking to sign more 3 players with the €150m they can gt from selling some other players , but no one predicted they wont leave ! Some clubs got problems to keep their players such as ManU , Inter and the opposite happened for us that they dont want to leave and prefer a salary cut according to the latest negociations .

Inter has problems like Real in trying to sell its players. The only players that talked about leaving were Ibrahimovic and Maicon. Ibrahimovic left and Maicon got a raise. So no one wants to leave Inter. That is a problem because we are trying to sell Rivas, Mancini, Obinna, Burdisso, Kerlon, and Vieira. Inter has 31 players right now and Mourinho says that is way too much. I know that RMA has at least 7 or 8 more. Good luck to Pellegrini.

I would rather be coaching a team with an overabundance of quality players than a team with lesser quality players. Real has EXTREME depth and now Pellegrini has to try-out the best combos that will yield the most goals up front, midfield etc. I would pressume he has already done that on the practice pitch so it may well be a matter of just giving the players pitch time rather than simply playing favorites or what have you. After all, the Peace Cup is just to get the wheels greased & keep the players in top shape for the beginnig of the next season.

As far as Inter Milano is concerned, i am EXCEPTIONALLY pleased that they won te Scudetto this past season and i hope that my good personal friend Luis Figo still plays for them. As long as Inters cross town rivals continue with their out-to-lunch policy Inter will do well. Juve, well, the old lady may very well just cough up plegh again this coming season, who really knows? As for Roma, i never know whats what with those guys??

Nevertheless, Real MAdrid are the MOST powerful soccer team in Europe right now, REGARDLESS of what the "other" jealous types may think. Moreover, like i have been saying since day one, I sincerely HOPE that Man. Utd fans enjoyed their wonderful run since 1991 because their LUCK has finally run out! Man, is it ever going to be embarassing for Man. Utd....it will definately SUCK to be Fergie! Heck, he'll be splashing water & other substances to wake up from the horror. I even precdict he may get sacked (possibly?) or there may be a DANGER ZONE period for Man. Utd this coming EPL season. We'll just have to wait and see.

Predictions for the coming season???

Real Madrid WILL win LA LIGA & COPA DEL REY & CHAMPIONS LEAGUE & evrything else in between.

Inter SHOULD win the Scudetto yet again because the Porkchup coach is solid! I met him in Madrid circa 2003 in December - a great man!

As far as the EPL??? Dunno but i would like to see Man. City return to prominance again in the EPL and IF they play their cards right...who knows...they just may get there! Since Liverpool are ALMOST bankrupt as a team, I REALLY DON'T know what Rafa is going to do this coming EPL season? Maybe IF he starts making the remaining players a paella lunch we should see some GREAT PLAYING ATMOSPHERE!

REAL MADRID, MADRIDISTA MEMBER (OFFICIALLY) SINCE 2004. WILL ALWAYS LOVE REAL!!!!!!

Love,

oasisthunder , I agree about Inter they will win again next season as they wont find any team which can disturb them except if Diego will do miracles with Juventus and if Ronaldinho will finally wake up . Balotelli and Eto'o will show that Italian aging defenses which used to be the best ones in the world will give up to their skills .

Moratti did good business and only new rules can stop him if Uefa bring up the 6+5 to the table and vote it , but at least not in 2 , 3 years .

Manchester Unted do not have problems keeping their players. The really good players always stay a long time. Even Ronaldo stayed six years. as for Tevez, well money was his problem. He couldn't get enough of it. Look at the likes of Giggs, Ferdinand, Vidic, Van Der Sa, Evra, Rooney, Scholes, Fletcher, and many others. They love Old Trafford and are there for life. These are the type of players Sir Alex wants in his team, not these merceneries who put money before Manchester United. Get your facts right.

Phughes , you are a bit excited now after few friendly games against Malaysian ,Indonesian and Chinese teams . When the real games start you will see what means to have Ronaldo and Tevez in the team . You will see why other clubs are not looking to sign players like Fletcher , Rooney . You will understand better football , a question of time . Watch this space .
