Werder Bremen

Werder Bremen have won the German Super Cup, beating Bundesliga champions VfL Wolfsburg at its own Volkswagen Arena.

Per Mertesacker put DFB-Pokal winners ahead on 21 minutes but had his goal cancelled out by Grafite in the 67th.

The away side went on to take the first trophy of the season though, as Clemens Fritz made it 1-2 with nine minutes to go.

Wolfsburg substitute Daniel Baier was red-carded just before full time.

Werder won the Super Cup three times before. The match wasn't played from 1997 to 2007, to return as unofficial event in 2008.

Some consolation to Werder fans who must be missing Diego. Really, I don't know what happened with Werder this season. They just focused on the UEFA cup and forgot about Bundesliga dropping to 10th. At least they got something.

Well done to Werder Bremen. They were a little unlucky last season and this is some small compensation for all their efforts.

Same club lost 5-1 toWolfsburg in their last league game. we are taking note of this funny trends. Will this continue in the new season? there is need for some level of sanity in the game called football, particularly in the Bundesliga.
