Penalty leads Honduras past Canada in Gold Cup quarters

Honduras are through to the semi finals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2009 following a 1-0 victory over Canada in the quarters.

The only goal of the match was scored in the 36th minute. Stalteri fouled Walter Martinez in the penalty area and the forward himself struck the following spot kick right trough the middle with goalkeeper Sutton diving to the left.

In the remainder of the match Canada did push for the equaliser and came close late on when McKenna's header hit the left post.

It is the third time that Honduras manage to reach the semi finals. In 1991 the Central Americans even finished second, and the third place was achieved in 2005.

Bravo Soccerway!!

Everyone be alert here, I won't even go to any sites listed here and I guess will never post a site. Hope it is nothing serious. I am always behaved here, at least nearly always.

Vuvuzelas are blowing, it's crazy at USA Panama game, the USA is largely, all are players playing domestically, Howard and Donovan are USA's big guns and are not playing in the Gold Cup.

Penalty to Honduras, early in the game. I guess it was good enough. Canada really had enough chances to tie it up, they should have and if they couldn't, really, it's their fault, I am sorry to say. I was cheering Canada. I guess the call for a penalty was a good call.

The Gold Cup should be held elsewhere but it always falls to the US it seems to host it or almost always.

Canada really did play a decent game, passing okay, just came out a bit on the short end.

I really liked Canada's chances going into this game but once again they fail under pressure. They need more of a south american coaching staff i think to play with these teams. Check ut my blog!

Canadian soccer is terrible & it's been that way forever. I recall in WC SPAIN in 1982 when Canada went, they played 3 games and scored ZERO goals LOL!!! That was, believe it or not, their BEST performance EVER!

Since then Canada has sucked and sucked VERY hard. Moreover, they have developed a SPECIALTY for sucking BIG TIME! This is something that Canada does VERY well and there shoule be an award for this someday, i hope! Canada NEEDS to be recognized in sucking in soccer soo bad!

It really sucked that we lost, but I got to say I was impressed with the improvement in the quality of our game! Maybe next time! :(

I searched it out: anyhoo!!

Per the wikipedia article on the 1986 world cup, Canada went to their first world cup and yes, did not score a goal. (it was also Iraq and Denmark's first world cup).;

Canada went in 1986 I think, at least partially because Mexico hosted the games, that opened up another slot for CONCACAF.

1990, Mexico was banned from the World Cup, some sort of an "age" scandal with their junior team having older players, so that kind of opened up another spot. Not solidly like giving CONCACAF a spot and I don't think USA benefitted from Mexico not being able to go but it was a possibility.

1982: I remember, Honduras played a good World Cup and Mexico did not go of all things. Honduras did not advance and it is said sometimes, that Spain got a bit of favorable refereeing, if not with Honduras than with Yugoslavia.

World Cup is not the end of, in 1982, Austria and West Germany drew and that kept Algeria from advancing. Of all things, I looked it up Algeria actually defeated West Germany in that world cup!

Well, it looks like Mexico blitzed Haiti. If they play a good Gold Cup, fine with me. Mexico's always had major problems but it is really messed up now from what I can tell, but it's always had stuff, like in the late 1980s, they found a "slave-type" of marijuana plantation once that got busted. All kinds of stuff.

ITalkSense, where you at the Open? What a pity! I was hoping Tom Watson could turn the clock back. What about that 16 year-old Italian? I hope it was not a flash in the pan.

that should have been "were you at the Open?"

Alright TontoBabe. No I wasn't at the Open. I don't really care about Golf, or any other sport apart from the greatest game on earth(FOOTBALL).

The Italian boy Manassero probably will be a flash in the pan. Italians are only good at football.

ITalkSense, unlike Soccerway's management, you think too highly of me!

BTW, does it ever warm up in Scotland? Yesterday the temperature at Turnberry was 54. That's not even as warm as it gets in my area in mid-winter!

Canada is among the best at ice hockey but I don't think they are better than Sweden or Russia.

I think there is a hockey way like there is a soccer way.

Put that clear, Sweden, Russia, Canada, all best in the world at hockey.

ITalkSense, as if I didn’t know, I get the message! One of my ex-co-workers and best friends from the days I was in Canada is a Scottish guy, who wears a kilt when playing golf, by the name of Alan Donovan. He’s vacationing in Scotland right now. When he goes back to Canada, I will let him have it about what he always tells me about Scotland having the full 4 seasons!

PS. I wrote a novel about an area of Scotland, the Island of Millport, by the firth of Clyde, dedicated to a Scottish good friend of mine, James Murphy. He passed away before we could win the lottery and before we could say good by.
