Egypt revive World Cup hopes by defeating Rwanda

AFP - 5 July 2009 23:30

Egypt´s Mohamed Zidan (back) eyes the ball as he stands behind Rwanda´s Aimable Rucogoza during their African zone 2010 World Cup group C qualifying football match in Cairo. Egypt revived hopes of appearing at the World Cup for the first time in 20 years with a 3-0 triumph over Rwanda.

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Egypt revived hopes of appearing at the World Cup for the first time in 20 years with a 3-0 triumph over Rwanda in Cairo Sunday.

It was a must-win game for the 'Pharaohs' and midfielders Mohamed Aboutrika (twice) and Hosny Abd Rabou scored in the second half for a team that troubled Brazil and beat world champions Italy last month at the Confederations Cup.

Victory lifted reigning African champions Egypt from last place on the Group C table to second, level on four points with Zambia and three adrift of Algeria at the halfway stage of the final qualifying phase.

Rwanda have only one point in the race to finish first and qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the first time the world football showpiece will be staged in Africa.

The matches double as eliminators for the 2010 African Nations Cup in Angola with the top three teams on the final standings securing places at a championship staged every two years.

Although Egypt have lifted the Nations Cup trophy a record six times, the 'Pharaohs' have managed just two World Cup appearances and the last was at the 1990 finals in Italy where they went out after the first round.

A home draw with Zambia and away loss to Algeria placed unexpected pressure on an Egyptian team lacking skipper Ahmed Hassan, fellow midfielder Ahmed Fathi and striker Amr Zaki through injury and suspension.

Hassan rallied his team-mates ahead of the crucial game by insisting all was not lost in the chase to overtake resurgent Algeria and they were quickly into their stride without being able to sting the 'Wasps' defence.

Defender Wael Gomaa, Abd Rabou and Germany-based striker Mohamed Zidan squandered chances to break the deadlock before the central Africans settled, using the offside trap effectively.

Rwanda, whose only previous clash with Egypt ended in a 5-1 loss five years ago, created a clear cut chance only for a Harouna Niyonzima chip to finish just off target with veteran goalkeeper Essam al-Hadary beaten.

Unmarked Zidan allowed another chance to slip before Rwandan goalkeeper Jean-Claude Ndori was finally beaten 20 minutes into the second half when Aboutrika headed an Abd Rabou cross into the net.

Abd Rabou got the second by sending Ndori the wrong way from a 76th-minute penalty awarded for a foul on substitute striker Ahmed Raouf and Aboutrika tapped home the third three minutes into stoppage time.

Egypt visit Rwanda and Zambia in September and October before completing their mini-league schedule at home to twice World Cup qualifiers Algeria during November.

Should Algeria go, they will deserve it, having defeated Egypt and having gone to 2 World Cups...

Soccerway holds up stories sometimes on competitions broadcast and rebroadcast late...

Watched this Argentine Championship... winner here, great game http://www.lequipe.fr/Football/breves2009/20090705_232455_velez-sarsfield-est-champion.html Lequipe even reported it. , most physical league I've seen, about the most exciting too and most passionate fans...some bad calls in this game, saying Huracan scored a goal in the first half, rule off side, the announcer says this but I thought it was offside....game would be better with replay, soccer never will...

Does anyone know what teams will be promoted to Argentina's first primera division?? Last year, I saw Nueva Chicago, yes, that's the name of the team relegated and I was hoping they'd make it back up. Teams getting relegated and the fans crying?? Yes they do that down there. Too much controversy on plays down there, people thought Chicago got ripped off but not in the last game that actually sent them down.

E_t_V,

Unfortunately SoccerWay does not post any news on Argentinian football, or any other South or Central American premier league for that matter.

Ditto for the major TV networks.

Which is a pity, because I know that there are some truly great games played in South America and also in Asia, and I would really like to know a lot more about clubs and players from these continents.

A year ago, I know this was discussed somewhere but I'm unsure where.

Just like the MLS championship often makes it into the S-way stories.

We do get the A-league from Australia, we get a lot of the WC qualifiers for Asia which are enjoyable, Saudi Arabia, Koreas, etc.
