Owen linked to Man United move

Owen heading for Old Trafford?

Rumors have surfaced with Manchester United being the latest club to be linked to striker Michael Owen, but the club have refused be drawn into the speculation.

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker, who is out of contract after his deal with Newcastle United expired in June, did not return for pre-season training with Newcastle.

The 29 year-old forward scored 10 goals in all competitions last season, although an ankle injury and groin operation severely disrupted his season.

Any deal for Owen would be subject to the striker passing a stringent medical, which could take place as early as Friday, given his frequent injury problems over the last few years.

"We don't comment on transfer rumours," a Red Devils spokesman told BBC Sport.

United are in need of strikers with the departures of Carlos Tevez, Cristiano Ronaldo and a possible move for Frazier Campbell as well.

The departure of those two players has left United manager Sir Alex Ferguson with a shortage of strikers, with Frazier Campbell also likely to be sold.

But on the other side Injury still remains an issue with the striker, with Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce ruling out a move for the striker earlier this week regarding his history with injuries.

"I just question the injury scenario," said Allardyce.

"I need a striker that's going to be available for 30 games next season. That's not happened for Michael over the last four years."

After Newcastle were relegated to the Championship, Owen expressed his desire to remain in the Premier League.

Owen was widely reported to be earning more than £100,000-a-week at Newcastle after signing a four-year deal when he moved from Real Madrid in August 2005 for a club record fee of £16m, though his wages are unlikely to be a problem for the Old Trafford club.

However, his time on Tyneside was marred by injury problems, as he suffered a broken metatarsal bone, knee ligament damage sustained at the 2006 World Cup, as well as a double hernia operation and a thigh problem.

The forward has made 79 appearances for the Magpies and scored 30 goals in four seasons.

If Owen does move to Old Trafford it would revive the former Liverpool striker's hopes of resurrecting his international hopes and taking part in the 2010 World Cup.

Maybe Owen's best days are behind him. Besides, he gets injured so easily these days that he spends more time in the infirmary than on the pitch.

If he does move to Old Trafford, I really want to see if Sir Alex will be able to get him back to the kind of form that he enjoyed 5-6 years ago.

I would love to see Michael do well, and play for England again. It doesn't matter how good a player you are, you have to be fed to score goals. He looked bad at Newcastle because they just didn't have a good team who could feed him.

At Manchester there are lots of talented players and I feel sure he will do well. With the goals, will come his confidence again, I'm sure.

Paul, you may be right about Owen. I don't believe he's washed up yet. With MU he may rediscover his old form. I believe he's still just under 30 years of age. He’s got the speed and hopefully the motivation. He’s not that big but he has enough speed and courage to overcome his physical shortcomings. He may not be Ronaldo, but he will try hard. I wish him luck.

"Why doesn’t Michael Owen simply retire? For weeks and weeks Newcastle United even under Alan Shearer persisted in deluding themselves that he could come back and save them. Yet for so many months now Owen has been little better than a cripple and a casualty, constantly pushed back on the field against all logic and fairness.

The fatuous delusion seemed to exist that Owen could still get the goals to save The Magpies. Yes, Owen in his glorious prime could probably have got those vital goals. But now? It seemed like a collective delusion which was shared even by Shearer. Owen in his earlier years did magical things which will always be remembered in English football.

He is a rich man with a string of horses and a splendid house. No doubt leaving Newcastle he could find some other deluded club, but why should he? Lord knows he has worked in the past with splendid diligence on his various persisting injuries, not least when, as we know, he went to Germany for treatment. But the time has come both for him and the clubs to face reality."

Always a good read, Glanville, not always right is he. Owen's problem has been those injuries, I won't forget him twisting his knee with no one on him in the WC '06.

Tonto, I have had a feeling for quite a while that he would try to bring Michael (who incidentally, went to my school in Wales) to Old Trafford. Sir Alex is a very shrewd person, it's costing him nothing really because of the free transfer and he has managed to half Michael's salary and offered him goal bonuses.

He resurrected the careers of Eric Cantona and Terry Sheringham, and I see no reason why Michael cannot become a top player again, given the talented players he has around him.
