Donovan issues ultimatum to Galaxy over Beckham

AFP - 3 July 2009 01:25

Landon Donovan, pictured in June 2009, has issued the Los Angeles Galaxy an ultimatum - have English superstar David Beckham clean up his act or risk the departure of Donovan, the club´s all-time top active scorer.

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Landon Donovan has issued the Los Angeles Galaxy an ultimatum - have English superstar David Beckham clean up his act or risk the departure of Donovan, the club's all-time top active scorer.

"Let's say he does stay here for three more years. I'm not going to spend the next three years of my life doing it this way. This is (expletive) miserable," Donovan said in passages from a forthcoming book put on Sports Illustrated's website.

US national team captain Donovan blasted Beckham in the book, entitled "The Beckham Experiment", questioning the former England captain's work ethic, leadership and ability to be a good teammate on the Major League Soccer squad.

"Maybe he's not a leader. Maybe he's not a captain," author Grant Wahl quotes Donovan as saying in the book, scheduled to be released later this month.

"But at a minimum you should bust your ass every day. That hasn't happened."

Donovan, who led the Americans to a runner-up finish on the weekend at the 2009 Confederation Cup, is one of the most decorated players in Galaxy history.

He leads all active Galaxy players in career goals (58), assists (44), shots (226) and game-winning goals (14). He holds club records for multi-goal games (14) and penalty-kick goals (17).

Donovan believes that Beckham, as the highest-paid player in the US league, has a responsibility to his team and especially to his Galaxy teammates to set an example through hard work.

"If someone is paying you more than anybody in the league, more than double anybody in the league, the least we expect is that you show up to every game, whether you are suspended or not.

"Show up, train hard, show up and play hard.

"As time has gone on, that has not proven to be the case in many ways, on or of the field."

Beckham is currently on loan from Los Angeles to AC Milan. The 34-year-old Beckham was originally supposed to return for the entire 2009 season but got his stay in Europe extended to halfway through the MLS season.

Beckham is scheduled to return to the Galaxy on July 16, two days after the release of the book.

"I can't think of another guy where I would say he wasn't a good teammate," Donovan said. "He didn't give everything through all of this. He didn't still care. But with (Beckham) I would say no, he wasn't committed."

Donovan said Beckham's attitude changed after the team got rid of former coach Ruud Gullit.

Gullit left the team a little over a month after Beckham played his first game in Los Angeles.

"He (Beckham) just flipped a switch and said, 'Uh-huh, I am not doing it anymore.'

"It coincides with Ruud being let go."

Donovan said Beckham was sincere when he arrived in North America but became discouraged easily.

"He cared. He wanted to do well. He wanted the team and the league to do well," Donovan was quoted as saying.

"My sense is David is clearly frustrated that he is unhappy and honestly, that he thinks it is a joke. I don't see dedication or commitment to this team and that is troubling."

I'm glad someone finally had the "intestinal fortitude" to say it. Way to go, Lando!

It's the MLS. It's no Premeire League or La Liga. Donavan is not even on Beckham's level. The MLS is such a garbage league. Beckham is just gracing it with his presence.

No matter where you go you ALWAYS have to give ur absolute effort. Jsocontrer, you will learn that maybe later on in your live. Well done Lando, that worn out football player deserves it!

It's a joke league. Donavan couldn't even make it in the German league. He is just jealous of Beckham.

I agree with Landon 100% about Beckham, but I think he went about it the wrong way. You don't go putting that stuff in a book.

It should have been handled internally.

David is a "GARBAGE" anyway...............

I have great respect for Donovan and I honestly don't understand what the deal was with Bayern and why he couldn't fit in. I think he is a great player and visionary, a true leader, always a step above the other Americans (but maybe that's not saying much). But I agree with NakedWake that the way he handled this was poor at best. Why would you write about that stuff in a book? Beckham is who he is. If you don't like him, you resolve it differently. You don't write books about it.

This is just an excuse for Landon to try to force himself out of Galaxy. We all know he tried to push for a move to Munich and prolong his stay in Germany the same time Beckham pushed for a permanent move to AC Milan. Munich didn;t want Donovan. Now he's making all these noise because of bitterness. I don't agree with Donovan. After all, Beckham travelled half-way around the world from international duty to play for the Galaxy only a few days later. He could've just said he was tired. Everyone knows Beckham is a professional on and off the pitch. This is one man's words against a few who have testified that Beckham is model professional. Sorry, Donovan, you lose.

sorry donovan, hes actually garbage even when hes trying hard. you're not missing anything.

Donovan showed poor judgement and a total lack of sensitivity, in saying what he said.

Like him or not, David Beckham has always been a true professional and Donovan should have tried to resolve his differences with Beckham behind closed doors.

I see the whole thing under a different light. Donovan has just come back from a successful Confederation Cup. He has finished the book and now is the perfect time to stir up the reaction and emotions of American fans. Whether Donovan likes Beckham or not, it was a smart business move. Landon knows he has but a year or two left as a player and he’s trying to take advantage of this rare opportunity to make a quick buck and retire.

I have to say that I agree with Tonto maybe the first time about something . He is just taking advantage of the situation and I wonder even if any American heard about him , he could make a book that he can sell worldwide and respect people's choices instead of acting so , completely unprofessional , he will regret his little book .

Donovan who?

Another person that is trying to make his name known using Beck's name....

Nothing to compare - one is world wide known FOOTBALL player, other is well known within his close family....

Hm..let me think who would buy a book about soccer..........

I thought Donovan was a pop singer from the sixties in England. That's how famous he is not.

It seems to me he is a jealous bastard, like a lot of people these days and he wants to be noticed.

Landon Donovan, you are out of your mind! Beckham travels the globe to promote the Galaxy and the MLS and what an ambassador he is. The numbers don't lie, attendance levels are higher than they ever were thanks to David Beckham. They're certainly not coming to see Landon Donovan.

David Beckham's stint with AC Milan was a success. You're stint with Bayern Munich was not. The fact you went out on loan, doesn't exactly put you in a position to slate Beckham for doing the same. In any case, Beckham should have a go at you for using his name in the title of your book. The only way you might sell a copy or even two.

This overhyped football freak called Beck sure has some diehard supporters. He should IMO quit active playing of the round leather and concentrate on his salesmaanship and physical outlook. The female lot will appreciate room for more speculations about him.

Acctually I am not getting - what is the ultimatum about? What Donovan will do?

By the way didn't Beck tryed to leave LAG, offered some money for that, but LAG didn't want to talk at all. Why they did it for somebody who diesn't do a shit.....? Hm......maybe that somebody donovan speaks as he plays, senselessly

Donnovan is a closet gay who dreams of sucking on a long, lightskinned frankfurter it's as simple as that! When he sees the bold, beautifyl yet stylish Beckham he dreams of that fine meat within that he cannot have. Gays, all over the world for that matter, have a delectible penile envy; especially when this is interrupted by wild & torrid dreams of meaty sexcapades that shall never bare fruit. Its quite common for those in Donnovans shoes to feel the sudden urge for the hot-salami after a long & sweaty practice or game for that matter.

The best thing to do here is to start up a friendly conversation with Becks to feel him out as it were. Great friendships and bonds can be created in this manner that may very well lead to some hot trists down the road. If this approach fails, then Donnavan may be forced to take a brisk yet cool shower to tenderize him up a bit and let those emotions lock themselves up; tame the inner tiger as it were.

Whatever happens, though, YOU DECIDE!

guys donovan didn't write the book. some other guy wrote a book called "the beckham experiment" and had donovan interviewed for more insight into how beckham was as a player/person, and that's all donovan did. he told him straight up.

Jsocontrer, donovan could make it in the german league no doubt, just sorry he couldn't immediately come into a BAYERN MUNICH side who already had the likes of ribery, poldy, schweiny, klose, toni, and altintop already playing attacking positions. you putz. and also, give the mls 5-10 more years to get their act together and you'll see. don't forget, the league is like 13 years old.

4 July 2009 18:02

oasisthunder,

Are you gay?

No doubt Beckham is a great champion and no doubt Donovan is using his name to sell books, but to all those Beckham lovers out there who seem to think that he transferred to Galaxy so he could be an ambassador to football, I say give me a break! Have you forgotten the fee that he transferred to

Galaxy for? Let me remind you friends. It was for 250 million that he would earn over five years. It's all about money folks. That is what pushes Beckham. That is why Donovan made those comments. And that is what will motivate every other footballer.

Alboi , let me remind you also that David gets $1 million a week as revenues this includes his salary and all his commercial revenues. That's the price it costs to go so down and play with Galaxy .

guys donovan did not write the book. it's not his book. he did not come up with the idea for the book. he's not making money from the book (aside from maybe being paid for the interview)

Kaiser1974: well, that tells us a lot thanks.

Galaxy just got this Eskandarian player who scored last night and the Gals look to be back. Games on replay later, I did not watch how it played out. Rebroadcast on Fox Soccer around 1:00 EST.

Landon is really showing himself to be a great player. Donovan one of the top stars in the Confederation Cup, helped US get to quarterfinals in '02 World Cup. USA may have gone further, but the German player had a similar "hand" block on goal in that game as was in the Egypt/Brazil game.

People often belittle Beckham, that is Brain Glanville's forte at http://www.worldsoccer.com but I think Beckham proved his worth to AC Milan. If it is only an interview of Donovan, that is not a very big deal.

Jsocontrer, say what you want, I'd rather watch MLS than the spoiled playboy multimillionaires in Europe. You may well have a Mexican name to be saying this stuff too.

Donovan who?? Donovan McNab.
