Canadian defender David Edgar, seen here in April 2009, ensured he would stay in the Premier League next season when he signed for newly-promoted Burnley from relegated giants Newcastle on Wednesday.

LONDON, July 2, 2009 (AFP) - Canadian defender David Edgar ensured he would stay in the Premier League next season when he signed for newly-promoted Burnley from relegated giants Newcastle on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old - who was mainly notable for being sent-off in the Magpies tame last day defeat to Aston Villa which consigned them to the Championship - will cost Burnley a nominal fee.

Edgar - who has represented Canada at Under-17 and Under-20 level - signed a four year contract with Burnley, who reached the Premier League via the play-offs.

He becomes Burnley manager Owen Coyle's third acquisition of the close season, having made a double swoop on Tuesday, outlaying a club record 3million pounds for highly-rated Scotland international Steven Fletcher and 500,000 pounds for defender Tyrone Mears.

Read about this at CBC.ca too. He'll be in the Gold Cup team for Canada.

Isn't it interesting, there has been a player, Edgar Davids, played for Netherlands, Tottenham, etc.

And this guy's name is David Edgars.

We'll have to see, see too, if Newcastle can make it right back up. I think they will in at least 2 years time. Some teams never get back up, could go the way of Leeds. I don't mind Newcastle but they've been messing that club up for years, it's been a circus with the managers, tough times for the players, some good. Newcastle had that guy who was a star for Chelsea, Irish international, Damien Duff is the name I think.
