US Soccer intend to launch World Cup bid

AFP - 30 January 2009 00:40

US Soccer will formally announce its intention to bid for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups on Monday, the US football federation said in a statement on Thursday.

CHICAGO (AFP) - US Soccer will formally announce its intention to bid for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups on Monday, the US football federation said in a statement on Thursday.

World football's governing body, FIFA, has invited countries to express interest by Monday in either or both 2018 and 2022. It will choose the hosts of both tournaments in December 2010.

On Monday, US Soccer president Sunil Gulati is to hold a national media conference call "to discuss the federation's intentions to submit a simultaneous bid to FIFA for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups" and to introduce the executive director of the US bid committee.

Several other nations have already notified FIFA of their intent to bid.

Japan's football chief said Thursday that the Japan Football Association submitted a letter of intent to bid for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups while also pitching Tokyo's candidacy to host the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Australia, China, England, Indonesia, Mexico, Qatar and Russia are also among countries to express interest in bidding for the World Cup. Belgium and the Netherlands, as well as Portugal and Spain, are considering joint bids.

The next World Cup, in 2010, will be staged in South Africa, and Brazil is to host the 2014 tournament.

I'm English and would love to see it happen in England, but all credit to The U.S.A. if they get it again. The 1994 World Cup was excellent. They certainly know how to put on a good show.

The average attendance for the tournament was 69,000 while the total attendance was 3.6 million. The 1994 World Cup holds the record for the highest attendance in World Cup history. It was also the highest-attended single sport event in United States history.

US has the most number of really large stadiums.................

English stadiums look boring.............

Italian stadiums look great too.............

i suggest holding the tourney in Antarctica..........the hordes of penguins there should break new attendance records..............LOL

why not let the following countries co-host the world cup...........

Afghanistan - the Taliban can provide the snacks with poppy seed cookies and cakes.......

Pakistan - American fighter jets will give fly-passes on their way to bombing missions.......

Iran - Israeli and Iranian jets and missiles can provide the pre-match fireworks..........

Iraq - those roadside bombs should ensure team buses will bring players to the matches on time.........

Gaza - Israeli tanks will escort team buses and TV crew can use the attack choppers too..........

It would be nice to see the WC Finals in my back yard. The stadium in State College, PA, holds 107,000 spectators. I believe it's the 3rd largest in the world! Canada should also host a few games just to make it more exciting.

US should wait at least until they figure out what the name of the sport is.

Every final od the football world championship should be played at Wembley

The US staged the best World Cup ever in 1994 and it would great for the game if they did again.

I hope they get in 2018, rather than 2022.

Fred, if they do, I promise that I'll vist with you in the US and we'll go and watch some games together.

The Americans don't deserve this.It would be a disaster. How can you host the biggest tournement in the world in a country that doesn't even call the game by its proper name? They should just be grateful that they were allowed it in 94.

As for England getting it... the only reason they want it - is so they can cheat like they did when they won their 1&only Cup way back in 66. lmao

107,000 seat stadium for a university ?!

BTW, you sure you'll still be around to watch it ? LOL...................

Wembley ??? to hell with that over-glorified stadium...........

i don't think the English can win even with all the cheating they can come up with.............

their best chance was way back in 1990.........

Giorgio, I may not be alive in 2018 and even less likely in 2022.By then I'll be 82 years old! I have a better chance to meet you if I come to South Africa in 2010.

Bes Talent, yes! It holds 107,000 spectatore. It's a university stadium. The city only has 70 thousand people! It's a very good stadium, much better than Wembley

veljo12

30 January 2009 20:05

well, one says Wembley and doesn't need to explain anything else. The story completed. It is the same if one says San Siro or Marakana or Old Traford....

If one mentioned University stadium somwhere in PA, well, it will be a lot explain to do; what football? line across thr field? where? ....soccer? ....a lot

Tonto's been blessed to see Italy win 2 world cups in his lifetime, I'd be satisfied with that and two that are basically in recent memory: the African Cup is held every two years, I really think that's a better schedule.

America did a fantastic job last time, why shouldn't they be given the chance again.

As for it being fixed when England won it, I was there mate. nothing could be further from the truth.

In July 1966 England had to play their hearts out to win one of the greatest finals ever. Germany were beaten good and proper in the end after a controversy over one of England's goals.

It just shows how much you don't know doesn't it?

Controversial third England goal in extra time

With eleven minutes of extra time gone, Alan Ball put in a cross and Geoff Hurst shot from close range hit the underside of the cross bar, bounced down - apparently on or just over the line - and was cleared.[3] The referee Gottfried Dienst was uncertain if had been a goal and consulted his linesman, Tofik Bakhramov from the USSR, who in a moment of drama indicated that it was. After non-verbal communication, as they had no common language, the Swiss referee awarded the goal to the home team. The crowd and the audience of 400 million television viewers were left arguing whether the goal should have been given or not.

England's third goal has remained controversial ever since the match. According to the Laws of the Game the definition of a goal is when the whole of the ball passes over the goal line [2].

In England, supporters cite the good position of the linesman and the statement of Roger Hunt, the nearest England player to the ball, who claimed it was a goal and that was why he wheeled away in celebration rather than tapping the rebounding ball in.

German supporters cite the possible bias of the Soviet linesman (Bakhramov was from Azerbaijan), especially as the USSR had just been defeated in the semi-finals by West Germany. Bakhramov later stated in his memoirs that he believed the ball had bounced back not from the crossbar, but from the net and that he was not able to observe the rest of the scene, so it did not matter where the ball hit the ground anyway. When Bakhramov was asked on his deathbed how could he be sure the third goal had crossed the line, he was alleged to have replied 'Stalingrad'.[4] Swiss referee Gottfried Dienst, otherwise regarded as the best referee, did not see the scene.

ITalkNonsense is an apt name for a person like you. As a school teacher I meet people like you every day. Some of them I can help if they will listen and learn and some I cannot help, it doesn't matter how hard I try.

You are similar to the latter, with rocking horse shit for brains. It must be something in your genes. Your best bet is not to comment unless it is sensible. But maybe that would be impossible for you.

As the coppers say in England "Evening all"

Yes I am a teacher, here in Bangkok. All my work is private now. It's interesting, to say the least and as I said before some students are great and want to learn and others make life very difficult, But I try my best with all of them.

I have been here many years now. it certainly beats them cold chilly mornings, scraping the ice off the windscreen.

The last Euro Cup was entertaining to watch and the matches quality. We didn't see much in the way of people feigning injury and the like and after all, there is a lot of that in the World Cup. I tend to like the continental cups like Africa and Euro and Asia better.

My backyard, St. Paul Minnesota, you want to talk about old, go see the latest Clint Eastwood movie "Grand Torino", Detroit gave the movie company so they say, a tax break for the movie but it was written by a guy in the Twin Cities, Minneapolis St. Paul and Clint Eastwood plays an older man. Anyway, a lot in that movie is real familiar as the guy helps out the Hmong, who I know real well and Clint's got a Polish last name like mine oh and the barber in the movie is Italian. Kind of a feel good movie, everyone should see it. Those Hmong, I go to their sports festival every year and watch the soccer/football games mainly but they've got a lot of other sports they play, top spin which is kind of like bowling with a top and lots of things.Enough of that.
