Fergie sees more Becks than Ronaldo in Serbian starlet

AFP - 13 January 2009 19:40

Sir Alex Ferguson claims Manchester United youngster Zoran Tosic, seen here in 2008, bears more similarities to David Beckham than Cristiano Ronaldo after admitting that the Serbian winger is just six weeks away from breaking through at Old Trafford.

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Sir Alex Ferguson claims Manchester United youngster Zoran Tosic bears more similarities to David Beckham than Cristiano Ronaldo after admitting that the Serbian winger is just six weeks away from breaking through at Old Trafford.

Tosic, 21, is due to receive international clearance this week after arriving at United from Partizan Belgrade in a 16.7-million-pound joint transfer with 17-year-old Adem Ljajic earlier this month.

The Serbia international will not be considered by Ferguson for the forthcoming Premier League fixtures against Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers due to his lack of match fitness.

But the United manager insists that Tosic has the attributes to make a quick impact in England, even if those expecting him to develop into another Ronaldo are likely to be disappointed.

Ferguson said: "There's a difference between Zoran and Ronaldo. Ronaldo is a player with fantastic speed who can dribble, but Zoran is more straightforward.

"There are similarities with David Beckham, though, in terms of getting from box to box and his delivery, but he is naturally left-footed. He has played on the right for Serbia, though.

"We have watched him play that position a few times, but his natural position is the left-hand side.

"Zoran understands the game very well, however. He is intelligent, has a great delivery of the ball and strikes it well too. He has good energy, so he is probably more similar to Nani than Ronaldo.

"We'd obviously like all of our young players to turn out like Ronaldo! That goes without saying, but we still look for the same potential.

"That means the potential to play in our first-team and we like to play with width, so Zoran is our type of player.

"There are several things that have to happen for the lad first, however. Settling in is always an issue for young players and they need to physically develop, get used to the English game. But we expect Zoran to progress on that quite well.

"We are looking at six weeks ahead, given the progress he needs to make because he hasn't played since Dec 10. He will need a good six weeks to adjust."

With Ronaldo developing into the most celebrated footballer on the planet since his arrival at United, as a replacement for Beckham, in August 2003, Ferguson admits that the Portuguese star is the perfect example to the youngster following him to Old Trafford.

Ferguson said: "In the case of Cristiano, we are all very proud of him achieving his status, but he has said himself that he owes a lot to Manchester United for nurturing him in the proper way, playing him at the right times and developing him as he is now.

"It's a two-way street really. The player must have ambition, drive and determination to succeed, but the club is a place where you have to develop and set your ambitions high.

"The challenge everyone should set themselves, not just United players, is the dream of getting to the very top."

Tosic insists that he is determined to prove his ability to succeed in England with the European champions.

He said: "I have followed Manchester United for years. As a boy, I never thought I'd be able to play for them, but later on, I thought it might be a possibility.

"We all know what sort of team and players we are talking about here, but it is up to me to prove myself and get in the team as quickly as possible.

"When I'm ready to play and when I'm chosen to play, I don't feel I will need to change many things. But it's up to the others to decide when I am ready."

I hope it is a good buy to replace the aging Giggs.

Giggs is an icon, and long been my favorite United player. Hate to see him go, when his time is up, but look forward to seeing the young players develope

Tosic comes to Old Trafford with a good pedifree. Once he has settled in I have no doubt that he will be a revelation. Not only the coach but the whole Manchester United scouting team are first class people who know what they are looking for.

A lot of work and effort goes into bringing the best players in the world to the best club in the world.

United steal players from all over the world, and when a BIGGER club like Madrid call on Ronaldo, the club and its stupid fans start crying. He'll get his dream move soon enough.

Don't be such a fool achavabill. Ronaldo would have been the player he is today, regardless of which club stole him.And United did STEAL him.He didn't come through their youth system.United stole him for £12million, which is probably the best 12million the club has ever spent.Especially when U consider they had to pay a ridiculous fee of 28million for the overrated Rooney, just because he is English(lmao)

It's not Madrid who are dreaming. The only 1 dreaming is Ronaldo... His dreams will come true sooner or later, and United will just have to live with that.

One man doesn't make a team, and I'm sure when Ronaldo moves on there will be someone to take his place.

As for "stealing players", United have one of the best academies in Britain and do not have to "steal" anyone. Most players are overwhelmed when United show an interest in them, because they know it is the greatest football club in the world.

cudn't agree more with phughes699...

MU produces superb young talents throughout the years.. They don't need to STEAL big names. They CREAT big names. Its Madrid who have the tend to

lure any players that are heading to Old Trafford to Bernebeu! wat a pity..

What the hell ?? ManU produces ??Real Madrid lure from Old Trafford ?? You have to be such blind dumb fanatics you ManU fans . Most of your players came from other smaller clubs , we got the same right as you to buy from a smaller club like ManU. .

after barcelona who probably have the best/ most succesful youth system in the world,

Man utd is the team that comes behind them.

barca produces,

bojan, messi, giovani dos santos, xavi, iniesta, puyol, valdes, guardiola, jordi cryuff, and so many others!!!

Manchester United produced,

beckham, scholes, giggs, keane, Neville G and P, Nicky butt, Johnney evans.

further more.

Man utd develop the talent the buy, look at the change Ronaldo made from when he first came, you cannot dispute fergusons effect on him, even his style has been altered a bit, and that definatly has something to do ferguson.

As a United fan I'm bound to think we have a good academy, which we have, but our youth system and Barcelona's isnt a patch on Ajax youth system.
