Cristiano Ronaldo wins FIFA World Footballer of the Year

12 January 2009 21:50

Portuguese football player Cristiano Ronaldo reacts after receiving FIFA world footballer of the year 2008 award in Zurich. Ronaldo, who is also holder of the prestigious Ballon d´Or for the European Footballer of the Year, beat off competition from 2007 winner Kaka (Brazil), Lionel Messi (Argentina), Fernando Torres (Spain) and Xavi (Spain).

ZURICH (AFP) - Manchester United and Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo was on Monday named FIFA World Footballer of the Year for 2008.

Ronaldo, who is also holder of the prestigious Ballon d'Or for the European Footballer of the Year, beat off competition from 2007 winner Kaka (Brazil), Lionel Messi (Argentina), Fernando Torres (Spain) and Xavi (Spain).

"It's an overwhelming moment in my career and I'd like to dedicate this award to my family, friends and colleagues," he said.

Ronaldo went out of his way to heap praise on United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, with whom relations became strained during last summer over whether he was going to leave the club for Real Madrid.

"It's also true that the manager always has an important role to play," said Ronaldo.

"It was a great season for me and for my club, and the coach was important for me because I learned a lot from him.

"His experience over so many years is of paramount importance - it's a privilege to have such a great club manager.

"This is the climax of a fantastic era for me. I'm happy and proud about what has been done by my team and what we have won.

"I am lucky to be part of the history of a club like Manchester United."

The 23-year-old, scorer of 42 goals in all competitions in the 2007-8 season, was one of United's architects behind the club's English Premiership and Champions League double.

It was not a perfectly scripted year for Ronaldo, however, as Portugal crashed out 3-2 to Germany in the quarter-final of Euro 2008 in June.

Ronaldo becomes the second Portuguese player to win the FIFA accolade after Luis Figo in 2001, and the first one playing for a British club.

He reaped 935 points in the vote in which the coaches and captains of 155 national teams took part. Messi finished second (678 points) and was trailed by Torres (203), Kaka (183) and Xavi (155).

Brazilian midfielder Marta was unveiled as FIFA World Women's Footballer of the year for 2008, for the third year running.

Marta delivered an outstanding performance at the women's Olympic football tournament in Beijing 2008, and equalled the record set by Birgit Prinz by claiming her third consecutive title.

For the women's vote, 139 coaches and captains cast their vote and Marta won comfortably (1,002 points) ahead of Germany's Prinz (328), Brazil's Cristiane (275), Germany's Nadine Angerer (198) and England's Kelly Smith (150).

A world champion who plays for a world champion club. What more can be said. He deserved it for his great exhibition of football skills last season.

Notice who was part of the reason he won it. Sir Alex ferguson. The World Champion Manager. Manchester United just seem to have everything these days. Maybe another Premiership title will follow this year.

Good for Ronaldo, MUFC are average without him.

Ok, I don't say that spitefully but the season showed that with CR, Man U was sputtering. So, without him, they are a bit better than your average PL team. Yeh, Manyoo is world champs and that's why Tevez and Ronaldo would like to be playing in Spain.

Don't take what I say as being disagreeable, I don't want to be like BTS.

Ronaldo??????? Yes he has stats, but his self centered, "super ego" was a poison to his Portugual Team in the EURO. Let us not forget about the Real Madrid- Man U controversy. He is a drama queen on and off the field.

I'll take Messi over Ronaldo all day long. He truely a magician on the pitch

As for Xavi, he has the heart of a lion and is the Glue which binds Barca and Spainish national team.

By the way 3 of the top 5 either play in La Liga (BARCA) or for Spain or both (Xavi).

Barca #1 La Liga

Espana #1 World

No surprise really, but if it was up to me... I would have given Messi the award.Ronaldo may have scored 42 goals, but how many were FreeKicks+pens? People should also remember how much rubbish is in the EPL.There is so much HYPE that surrouds it, but there is so much cannon fodder for Ronaldo to destroy. He wouldn't find it so easy in La Liga.If Fergie was offered a swap with Messi, I bet he wouldn't hesitate... and if United fans were being honest, 99% of them would also do THAT swap without hesitation... eh phughes699?

Ah! We see who has poisoned Portugal and it's a guy with a mustache from Brazil. Some can be happy with Portugal's performance, but they've had Deco, Figo, Maniche, Carvalho, lots of durn good players and Ronaldo and they should have taken it a step further without a bunch of analysis.

Plus: Ronaldo's not totally a big ego, the guys done charity work, I don't know if that match to play in Iraq ever came off but he was signed up for that. I think actually Ronaldo is a pretty good guy, I don't know what he was doing speeding in the ferrari, toy, pressure or what.

But if I were Spanish or Portuguese or Argentine, I can't fault these guys that they'd want to play in Spain, for someone of that background, it'd be exciting to be in Madrid as the world's best player.

Don't fault Ronaldo, he's wanted to go over and play in Spain, what was Barcelona last year anyway in the liga? 3rd place!

Ronaldo, about 300 votes ahead of Messi, just where he belongs!

If some one says Ronaldo doesnt deserve this award, then its bias. This lad scored a record 42 goals last season had everything - EPL, CL, world championship, Ballon d'or,.... you can name the rest.

I think the coaches, captains and football analysts from the 155 countries have a reason why they choosed him. He is a great guy.

SLOoOoOMI

13 January 2009 10:24

He deserve this award because he made my birthday better when Man United won Chelsea 3-0 this Sunday ..

and in else matter Saudi Arabia won over United Arab Emirates 3-0 in the very same day so I believed that "birthday wish.. can come true"

azemzi

13 January 2009 11:57

And he deserves it too for his good looking , he is not ugly like Rooney and other team mates likes Giggs , Tevez and Scholes. Portuguese rule !!

let's not talk up this pompous prick unless he wins the 'Galactic Footballer of the Century', shall we ?

i'm sure Jupiter's and Neptune's footballers of the year will say they take better free-kicks than Ronaldo...........

phughes699

13 January 2009 13:55

The award is given for the best skills in the world, not whether someone is a pompous prick or not. Personality doesn't come into it, it's skill that counts the most.

I for one wouldn't say he has the best personality in the world but he will learn with age about respect and that business.

ITalkShit thinks that it doesn't count if you score goals from freekicks and penalties. He also scored them with his right foot, his left foot, and his head. Is that skill or what ITalkShit?

He finished streets ahead of Messi in the ratings, and rightly so.

He clearly had the best year of anyone in the world, and he deserves the trophy. Now he needs to go to a larger city like london, or madrid or barcelona and become an even bigger star, instead of staying in that dump of a city manchester. Eventually the players will see manchester is a dump and its so small of a city that offers nothing to the residents that live there and they will go to real madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, arsenal or Milan instead. Liverpool is not a big city either but its much nicer and cleaner than manchester and its on the water

jewsoccer, you seem to be a geography expert. Unfortunately your geography is no better than your soccer expertise. It seems that you are after the award of asshole of the year on here.

By the way, the Israeli pro leagues have teams like Maccabi Tel Aviv, Beitar, all kinds, I read up on it once, 442 magazine.

We've got diametrically opposed thinking people here, people should be diplomatic and Phughes is a nice enough guy, someone coming up with some names though, I gotta wonder if they are just under a different name from guys we read, but then, some guys are taking out frustrations here, so don't let it get to people.

This is soccerway's home, we are in someone else's home, be nice. They've got fine stats and tables here.

Jewsoccer, are you informed enough to make the assumptions that you have about the fair city of Manchester, reading your comments I don’t think you are.

Manchester isn’t perfect but it is streets ahead of any other regional city in the UK, yes it has its poor areas but hasn’t every major city. Manchester is the third most visited city in the UK after London and Edinburgh and is second only London in terms of year on year economic growth (though it has slowed recently due to the global credit crunch) and again second only to London for the amount of bars, clubs and restaurant etc. Even though Birmingham has a larger population a recent poll voted Manchester as the UK’s second city.

The world we live in today (opinions will differ to whether it is good or bad) has been influenced more by the city and people of Manchester than any other city in the world. Manchester was the world’s first modern, industrialised city. Manchester provided its citizens with the first public library in the UK (John Rylands Library); it was the first city in the UK to have a permanently based orchestra (the Halle). We developed the first computer (take a step back and remember what we are using to conduct these debates). In 1888 the football league was founded in a hotel in Manchester (again, take a look at the site that you peruse).

There is an age old quote that we Mancunians are very proud of, it goes like this:

“What Manchester does today the world does tomorrow”
