Benitez turns fire on Man Utd CEO Gill

AFP - 12 January 2009 17:50

Liverpool´s Spanish manager Rafael Benitez arrives before they take on Preston North End in their FA Cup match at Deepdale in Preston, northwest England, January 3. Benitez, not content with attacking Manchester United counterpart Sir Alex Ferguson, has now criticised his rivals´ chief executive David Gill.

LIVERPOOL, England (AFP) - Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez, not content with attacking Manchester United counterpart Sir Alex Ferguson, has now criticised his rivals' chief executive David Gill.

In the build-up to last weekend's matches Benitez stunned English football with a series of comments about what he regards as Ferguson's hypocrisy, bullying of officials and serial whingeing.

And on Monday he accused Gill, also a senior figure at England's governing Football Association, of a conflict of interest.

Premier League leaders Liverpool could only manage a goalless draw with Stoke while English, European and world champions United thrashed title rivals Chelsea 3-0.

Although Ferguson's men are five points behind Liverpool, they could be top of the table by the time of Monday's Merseyside derby if they win their two games in hand this week against Wigan and Bolton.

But Benitez, far from being cowed into silence by recent results, broadened his attack on United.

"They were saying we are a threat. Now they know we are, they are playing mind games," he said.

"But I don't think it's a mind game when you have control over everything; it's a mind game when you have the same level as the other people, then you can show you are cleverer than the others," the Spaniard added.

"But when you have control of everything and your chief executive is powerful in the FA and things like this, then that is not mind games.

"Is there a conflict of interest with David Gill at the FA?

"That is another fact. It is a fact that one person has a lot of power and control, and is on a lot of committees in the FA. To me that is very strange."

Neither the FA nor United have commented.

Ferguson, in a tone that verged towards one of pity, responded to Benitez's initial comments by saying after the Chelsea match: "There was a lot of venom in what he has said and I don't understand where it has come from.

"He is obviously disturbed about something," the Scot added. "When he reflects on it he must realise what a ridiculous thing he is saying."

Well done Mr Benitez. The power of Utd in the FA was visible for me already many years ago just by watching referees decisions in their matches. Maybe one day all the truth will come out like what happened in Italy with Juventus some time ago.

Benitez needs to take some kind of nerve tablets to calm himself down. The fat man is crapping himself because he knows he still has to take his precious Liverpool to Old Trafford for a good hiding. By then I don't think they will be top either. It looks very much like another Manchester United Premiership. Jealousy is a very bad thing, fat man. Also slagging off your fellow managers is bad news too.

Nothing wrong with playing a psychological war of words, that's part of what Mourinho was about, in fact, Jose M. did it to take the heat off the players and that's not so bad and might pump up the players as well. Stoke City is fighting relegation and this year isn't like when Derby anchored the PL, all these teams are decent. Who knows, maybe Rafa spoke with Mourinho.

And as for other comments that Chelsea is feeling the world wide economic downturn badly, I thought it was Utd. that was suffering from it so much with AIG. Off topic I know but I'm not going to look for that other story.

Man Yoo really though does rely on Ronaldo, these other guys did do real well; but we saw they were playing averagely without the Fifa player of the year. course, I'm a big Ronaldo fan but not of his club, so I want him to stay healthy.

Benitez is absolutely right!!! The truth is that MU are doing the exact same that Juventus, and Porto did. They control the refs (as close to bribes as possible) and have a figure head involved in the Footballing Association of their respective coountries....Of course this is conflict of interest, and explains why MU, Porto, and Juve have been so superior in their respective nations over the 20 years or so. Quite simply, it is corruption, inappropriate conduct and they should be held accountable, but likely never will be. Its a bunch of BS!!!

We've heard so many stories on what Wenger, Ferguson and even what Phil says. I don't mind seeing Rafa saying a few things, he's the one playing the mind games.

Mourinho use to say all that stuff and it'd take the eye off of the players, Lampard, Terry, Drogba and all the things that happened to them. I think Benitez is doing that here with what's gone on with Gerrard and other things.

Blacksuperman, I feel if there was ever a conflict of interest at all, it would not be allowed.

Things like this are soon brought out in the open in Britain, especially with the British press. If there was any truth at all in what Fat Rafa said it would soon be investigated by the powers that be.

If David Gill has so much influence at the FA why was he so powerless to prevent the nonsensical four match ban handed to Evra for the mowergate incident. Mind games are great in football but there is an art to it, in this case Rafa has played right into Fergie's hand and needs to go back to the drawing board. Rafa is the current laughing stock in the British press. The word "Clown" is a very fitting description at present, Shankley will be turning in his grave!
