United defeat Chelsea to close on top spot

AFP - 11 January 2009 19:10

Manchester United´s English forward Wayne Rooney celebrates scoring against Chelsea during their English Premier League football match at Old Trafford in Manchester. United won 3-0.

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Manchester United moved to within five points of Premier League leaders Liverpool, with two games in hand, after a dominant 3-0 victory over title rivals Chelsea at Old Trafford here Sunday.

Goals from Nemanja Vidic, Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov, saw reigning English, European and world champions United go third in the table on goal difference from Aston Villa and left them just a point adrift of Chelsea.

The Blues remained second and four points off top spot but having, like Liverpool, now played 21 games.

Vidic scored in first-half stoppage-time when the defender was first to react to Berbatov's flick-on from Ryan Giggs's corner.

Rooney then made it 2-0 in the 63rd minute when the England striker sidefooted home from close range after Patrice Evra's fine cross from the left evaded the Chelsea defence.

Berbatov set the seal on a comprehensive win three minutes from time with a near-post volley from a Cristiano Ronaldo free-kick.

Man, teach these people Soccer the way its supposed to be played. JS Park, Ronaldo, Rooney, Vidic,Fletcher are the real mentors to this game. Hail United

These other guys did do well, but I think Ronaldo was key, they worry about him and it takes pressure off elsewhere. That may have been Chelsea's mistake and Big Phil saying that Ronaldo's best for now but maybe not the near future. Eventually, the best player in the world probably will want to go to Real and that would be exciting to watch. Still, Chelsea messed up but some other teams will play Man Utd. better.

Chelsea are not feeling well because of the financial crisis maybe . I hope the owners sell before it's too late .. It has been many months now Chelsea are just losing points , started with Bordeaux, Roma , Liverpool , Arsenal , Newcastle , Fulham , ManU ...

It's time to sell .

This was a good tactical game. There is normally not much between these two teams, but yesterday Manchester United really showed that they are up for claiming a third Premiership title in a row.

They completely outclassed Chelsea in front of their old manager Mourinho. He must have been wondering what has happened to Chelsea since he left.

United seem to be improving as the season unfolds. I think Benitez will now have to think about what he said because United actually scored five goals and had two disallowed. I felt the referee was bias a little towards Chelsea.
