Chelsea would be Euro champs if I´d stayed - Mourinho

11 January 2009 16:25

Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho, seen here in 2008, believes influential French midfielder Patrick Vieira will be back in action for the January 18 Serie A clash against Atalanta.

LONDON (AFP) - Jose Mourinho has insisted Chelsea would have won the Champions League by now if he hadn't been forced out of the London club by billionaire Russian owner Roman Abramovich.

The Portuguese, now in charge of Inter Milan, could only sit and watch as the Blues lost out on penalties to English rivals Manchester United in last season's final of the Champions League, European club football's leading competition, after leaving Stamford Bridge in September 2007.

During his three years in west London, Chelsea won two English titles, two League Cups and the FA Cup.

"We'd won absolutely everything apart from the Champions League... I would have won it with Chelsea," he told the News of the World. "My contract was until 2011, so I would have been there for seven years. It's enough time."

He added: "We got to two Champions League semi-finals in my three years. We were very close."

Mourinho was replaced by Avram Grant, a man who according to his predecessor "did nothing" in the job. The Israeli was sacked after the Champions League final and replaced by former Brazil and Portugal manager Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Mourinho, who said he didn't regret anything about his time at Chelsea and stressed he had no unifinished business with the club, was far more enthusiastic regarding the abilities of Scolari.

"I am sure he is ready for the pressure that comes with being in charge of Chelsea. I read recently that he had said 'real pressure' was being manager of Brazil. He's right... If Scolari has coped with that he can cope at Chelsea.

"That's why I believe at the end of the season he will be picking up a big trophy," Mourinho added.

Mourinho, at the start u were doing a nice jog but at one point u started going out off line. the best thing to do at that time was to send u out.it was a good thing that u were replace with a unqualify person.

Hi guys, i am new in this forum. As an objective lover of the game, i think Mourinho is just being repulsive and very unprofessional with such a comment towards Scolari. Mourinho couldnt get to the finals of the CL. during his 3 years in command. I think it wasnt the best performance judging from the fact that he took over one of the richest clubs in the world.

Mourinho is a great coach, but he speaks too much, i think. The Scolari he is blasting has done great things too.

One time he was nagging arround with Ferguson..... an uncomparable blend in terms of experience and achievements. He just needs to reduce his feelings of self importance and work harder. Soon, Inter will fire him for not meeting their goal- CL, cos i dont see inter even making the semi finals of CL.

Brazilian managers and coaches unlike their players are not highly rated by top teams. However I remember Mourinho did say before he left Chelsea it will take a miracle to win futher trophies with the current Chelsea squad. Thats one of the reasons why he left - it was all his players that he got in he was talking about. Maybe they should have kept the Grant/Cate/Clarke management combination. I know going forward the whole squad needs to be revamped particulalry with younger players.

Blaze, i agree with you on your point here, but i think Chelsea has got a very strong squad and can still win the league and do well in the CL, judging from the goal difference they have so far. I am not a fan of Chelsea though... i go for Arsenal who are disappointing due to the greedy spending attitute of "Mr. Economist" Wenger.

Some journalists who's word I respect and fans too, said that the Special one should have never been let go and they wanted him to manage the 3 Lions, so I guess JM knows what he's talking about....

It is easy to talk. It was fate when Terry slipped. I'm sure. United's name was already on that trophy. Him up there gave the trophy to the best team.
