Lionel Messi leads FIFA's poll, but only just ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo

ZURICH (SW) - The FIFA World Player of the Year Award could really go two ways as Argentinian Lionel Messi and Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo divide fans.

A poll conducted by FIFA.com shows that 39.4 percent of voters would like to see the award go to FC Barcelona's Lionel Messi, but another 39.0 percent picks Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United instead.

Brazilian Kaka (Milan) is third choice with 11.4 percent of the votes, followed by Fernando Torres and Euro 2008 MVP Xavi.

The winner of the award will be announced at a special gala in Zürich (Switzerland) on Monday.

This is ridiculous! Fanfare should have nothing to do with it. Ronaldo had the most sensational season over any other player and deserves the award. If he doesn't win, than as far as I'm concerned, the award is a farce.

If this is judged fairly, Christiano Ronaldo should win this award outright for his feats from last year's Premiership.

Messi is a fantastic player and he could walk away with this trophy in the future, but in all fairness he never did half as much as Ronaldo did last season.

I hope the people responsible don't make this award a farce.
